* * * * * * His mother, as predicted, had thrown a raging fit. A servant? A SERVANT? Xavier Ludwig Hohenzollern HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?! Her voice had been so loud that it had even made Anselm cringe, and THAT was saying a lot, his father had gotten used to his wife's shrieks over the years. But the sound had carried so loud that the windows shook. Literally. Xavier managed not to look as though someone had just blasted his ear membrane out. Somehow, he didn't even know how he'd managed that. Anselm looked like he'd swallowed a lemon. Tarti had glared at them both. And you'll ALLOW it? The two men exchanged a look; Xavier's was determined. Anselm knew how to read his firstborn son, better than anyone. Better even than his twin could. Yes. His answer shocked Tarti even more. But – a SERVANT, Anselm! Xavier could have anyone he wanted, ANYONE, no one would say no to the heir to the throne – He'd had just about enough at that point. Don't be ridiculous, of course they would have. His voice had come out with a lot more force than he had intended it to. It's Bella or no one, mother. And I don't need your blessing. I'll be at the Winter Gala. Tarti reared like a viper. Absolutely not! It's too dangerous. Xavier snorted. I'm FINE. I've been fine for a month. I'm not five years old anymore for you to coddle. She took a step back, breathing heavily. Anselm took the opportunity. Do what you feel is right, son; I can't choose for you.
Those words still made him smile, despite the sourness because Tarti wasn't speaking to him right now. But Xavier knew – if he turned back now, if he bowed his head, he would bel ost. Forever. She would always demand more of him. Anselm had also shed some light on the matter, privately, before escorting Xavier to the private plane. No woman will ever be good enough for you in her eyes, Xavier. All the same, I don't think anyone would make you happier than this girl apparently does. They had embraced, and then Anselm was escorted back to the palace, and Xavier took the flight to the US. His arrival had been carefully planned, and no one but those that were necessary knew about it. He was spirited through customs and the airport so fast that he wasn't even sure he knew where he was going. But once he was in the car that would take him to the school grounds, he breathed a sigh of relief. That had gone down well. Now, to the other part. The guards stopped the car, but blinked confused when they saw who got out. Your Highness. Xavier waved a hand. After five years of chasing me and dragging me back here by the collar you'd think we'd be past that. The older man cracked a grin. Here to attend the ball, Prince? Xavier couldn't help but return the expression at that, straightening his jacket. How does the song go again? 'The party don't start 'till I walk in'? There's your answer gentlemen. He was smacked on his shoulder so hard he barely avoided falling flat on his face. Grumbling in good humor, Xavier made his way up to the entrance and into the familiar building, following the sound of music to where he knew the ballroom was situated. One hand leisurely in his pocket, the other pushing the doors open a little wider, Xavier slowly entered, not really announcing himself, but he wasn't someone you could miss easily. Six foot six never did do well with hiding in a crowd. There was no sign of his injury, or that he was ever injured when he descended into the ballroom. He was the former King of Kings, and he was back to hi sold glory. His eyes scanned the floor, searching, seeking – finding. With a small smile, and with a finger to his lips as he passed, Xavier neared Bella and Dante so that he came from behind the girl, smiling. May I have this dance?

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Not attending the winter gala had been a rather appealing idea, but of course Dante had pulled the moral support card and so she had agreed. It hadn’t been that appealing since she wouldn’t be able to see X since he was still stuck in Germany, but of course she needed to be there for Dante who was a priority. So she went and got a dress, and even chose a pretty necklace that had worked well for it. It had been one that her mother had given her when she had turned sixteen and she hadn’t had much opportunity to use it until then. She spent most of the morning going over lists of things they needed to take with them with their return to Spain. The list wasn’t as extensive as the one she made for the end of the year, but there were things that needed to stay at Vineheart and things that needed to come with them to Spain. About three hours before the gala was supposed to start she showered and started to go through the motions for preparing for the event. She did her hair, her make-up, saving putting on the dress for last. By the time Dante came into her room she was ready to go, but the only thing that was missing was the necklace she had chosen. After about ten minutes of looking through it, she tried on different ones, all of which Dante deemed unsuitable for the dress so she was stuck without a necklace. She went to the ballroom with him, even though she would have liked to just continue her list.
There were people already there, and more were still arriving to the thing. You could see that there were people who already graduated attending, because the gala was open to everyone. You could see most of the students were talking, and of course the professors seemed to be doing their duty of chaperoning well enough since they were position around the room. Bella spotted a chair close by and she made a bee line for it, but that didn’t last very long. As promised she was sticking next to Dante for as long as she needed to, even if he wasn’t technically her date. She was going over the list one more time, asking Dante if there was anything else he wanted them to bring back home when she heard a familiar voice. She turned around to find X standing there, and she was excited but kind of confused too. He had only just told her a few days ago that he wouldn’t be able to make it, she had been understanding of the fact that he might have needed more time to recuperate, but here he was. Obviously he had fibbed a little, he had tried to surprise her again. She had noticed he certainly liked doing that, but she didn’t mind it because all that really mattered to her was the fact that he was there. She had missed him, it had been almost a month since she had physically been in the same room as him and there he was.
“I should say no, just because you said you weren’t coming” she teased lightly, “But I’ll say I’d love to because I missed you too much to say no”

* * * * * * It had taken him a painstaking amount of time, and a lot of careful planning, to make sure Bella didn't suspect a thing. She was good at fiddling out secrets from Dante, which was why Xavier had basically 'forgotten' to tell the Spanish prince anything until the last moment, just to be on the safe side. You never knew, and he didn't want to take any chances at all. That, and he honestly just wanted to surprise her. The last time he had, he had appeared at Vineheart and she didn't seem to mind, especially after he snuck into her room later on that night. Not that anything happened. He'd told Dante the truth about that – he wasn't going to do anything she didn't want him to do, and with her being half-asleep, really, the only thing he'd wanted was to snuggle up to her and fall asleep with her in his arms. Waking up had also been a treat, although Cosita had made sure he gave up his spot to her soon enough. The little impish dog. Xavier had, as promised, brought the puppy something as well, given that he and Bella had joked about it during their last online conversation. But it wasn't anything big and squeaky so she had nothing to worry about really, nothing that would scare the owner of the dog, he'd promised.
So after making sure Dante knew everything there was to know, and that Bella would be at the Gala, Xavier was happy enough when he saw her in the hall after entering. People noticed him, and he gave nods here and there, but really it was Bella's attention he wanted, and he got it soon enough. As predicted, he had chosen the right thing to do yet again. She hadn't clobbered him over the head, which was obviously a good sign. He gave her one of his more charming smiles, and swept her a proper bow, taking her hand and placing a light kiss to it, his dark eyes never leaving hers. There'd be no point in surprises if I told you everything beforehand, love, he said, almost smug. And he had every right to be, actually. He greeted Dante with a handshake and a wink, before returning his attention to Bella and offering her his arm. And well, let's just say I'm really lucky then, since you decided to grace me with your awesome dancing skills. He led them to the dance floor and turned her once before gently pulling her close to him, one hand resting lightly on the skin between her shoulderblades, the other curled close to his heart. He had no qualms in keeping her this close to him, even at a semi-formal dance. she was his girlfriend, he had every right. His lips brushed against her forehead gently, his head bowing low and close. It should be forbidden that you look so beautiful, he murmured quietly, only for her to hear, it'll make me jealous if anyone even looks at you. His steps were easy and graceful, no sign of any weakness, or injury. He knew that would make her feel happy, knowing he was back to his normal self. I've missed you, schöne, he commented gently, his chin lightly resting against her temple as the sounds of a slow waltz filled the room.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She was actually glad she was at the gala now, and it made sense that he had done all of this to try and keep it a surprise. Even though it had made her a bit sad because he might not have been able to make it, she had understood that if he had not been well enough to travel, it would have been okay. But he had of course been doing the whole surprise thing, it was something she had become completely okay with. The last time he had surprised her like this, it had been nice and well it wasn’t like she loathed surprises anyway. Either way she was just glad that he was there, and that he looked so much better which was what was most important to her. The whole time she had been back in Montana, especially after her visit she had been praying that he would be back to his old self as soon as possible. She knew that he hated being stuck in bed, because he was active and the longer he was going to be stuck like that, the easier it would be for him to just get bored. But there he was, standing like he was back to normal. He definitely seemed back to normal when he gave her the charming smile, and she only let out a small laugh.
“I think you are just lucky I don’t hate surprises” she said, “Or else you’d be in trouble when planning these things”
She took his arm when he offered it, giving Dante a little wave even though she was sure he wouldn’t stand there for long. She was pretty sure he had only been standing there with her just because he knew X would show up soon, he probably made some sort of arrangement with Viv to meet up somewhere. She let out a small laugh when he said that he was lucky that she had decided to grace him with her awesome dancing skills. While she was a pretty good dancer, well internally she knew that she was very skilled but it wasn’t like she was going to be outwardly conceited about it. But she did appreciate his comment, because he had been subject to dancing with her before. It was easy to dance with X, he was probably one of the easiest dance partners she had ever had, apart from Dante and her dance instructor. Dancing with him was easy, fluid and of course just the fact that there was basically no space between them was helping. She really wasn’t even all that aware that people were probably dancing around them, all that mattered was that X was there and that they were together. She closed her eyes for a second, as she just focused on the steps and the moment and his words made her smile. He was so completely biased, but of course she had learned that pretty early in. She was pretty sure he knew he had no real reason to ever be jealous, because she only loved him. She couldn’t help but smile when he said he had missed her, she had missed him too. The month had seemed unnecessarily long, especially with him being so far away, but she had managed. They had kept in contact, and she had talked to her parents about maybe visiting during winter break, even though that still had yet to be planned because she wasn’t sure how much she would be needed in Spain after Christmas.
“I missed you too” she said softly, “Having you physically in the room is so much better than just talking to you on skype, even though that was fun too”

* * * * * * He had to laugh quietly when, in her perfectly organised mind, she pointed out just what would have gone wrong or could have gone wrong. Yes, I am rather lucky aren't I? he quipped with a grin, I'm pretty sure that every girl would want to be surprised like this though. And now he was just teasing her, because he defintiely felt good enough to do so. When he'd been on his medication, both the pain and the one that helped him with his left arm, Xavier had been broody and moody and well, he wasn't the best of companies when he was like that. However, now that he was basically only on the arm meds, and even those were dwindling down, he could be himself again and not sift through holes in his memory to try and figure out whether or not he'd said something to someone and then forgotten all about it. It was a hassle when you had medication that was so strong it made the room spin for ten minutes after you took it, so he was happy that tonight, at least, he wouldn't have to worry about that. He only had to worry about the girl he was currently holding in his arms, and well, she honestly was the only person he would ever want to worry about next to family, truly. Talking to her online was one thing, actually being with her another.
The waltz was slow enough for them to be able to talk and be close at the same time. Slow dances were good for these types of things, it was the quick ones that really had you wondering whether you'd be able to talk or not, mainly due to all the different spins and turns. But for now, Xavier was just happy to be with her. He smiled when she admitted that she'd missed him too, and he felt a weight lift from his shoulders. He hadn't known he'd been waiting for those particular words, but now that she'd said them, it was all good again. All was well in the world tonight, at least in his mind. Skypeing was definitely fun, but I prefer real dates to Skype ones, he agreed with her in a quiet voice, lightly rubbing his chin against her skin. Given that he'd shaven for the occassion, there was nothing that she should worry about. Xavier's dark eyes scanned the gala ballroom and remembered all the other times he'd been in here in a similar situation, but never quite as happy as he was right now. He could see some staff members in the corner, obviously supervising. He was pretty sure he could see the Headmaster prowling along the lines and making sure everyone was behaving. And then of course the couples dancing on the floor, the colour variety of all the dresses, and even the suits the men were wearing varied. They weren't all traditionally black, like most of them had been during his junior years here at Vineheart. He couldn't spy Dante anywhere anymore though, so he was sure the prince was off doing what he did best. Which was being with Vivien. Focusing back on Bella and the waltz, although he was dancing it subconsciously anyway, the ballroom dances his mother had had him learn and drill throughout the years had definitely paid off, he could do them with his eyes closed now, Xavier could feel a smile rising on his lips. Whenever he looked at her, he smiled. It was infectious. I'm glad Dante managed to persuade you to come down here tonight, he said softly, the mischief glimmering in his eyes, it all came down to his persuasion skills in the end. Luckily, I can always rely on him for that. His lips pursed together so he wouldn't laugh.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- “Who knows some girls are weird like that” she noted with a small smile, “Just something you should keep in mind, should you ever feel the need to change girlfriends, not every girl likes surprises”
That last part was of course a joke, because she honestly would not be okay with the idea of him ever changing girlfriends. Well she hoped that he at least thought she was joking, though her tone of voice definitely was indicative of what she was trying to convey. But either way she was glad that he definitely seemed to be in a good mood, it was like returning to a somewhat sense of normalcy. She knew that his pain medication had probably been strong, and probably not fun to take, but here he was teasing her. This was definitely the first sign that things were returning to normal for what she was glad. Well that and she was glad that he was there with her, because she really had missed him. She had no qualms admitting that to anyone because it really was the most natural thing. She loved him, and it would have been ridiculous if she hadn’t missed him when they weren’t together. Heck she had missed him even before she had realized that she was in love with him, he had become such a large part of her life that being apart from him for too long definitely made her appreciate him more when he was in front of her. At this moment she really was having issues focusing on anyone else, though she was sure no one would be looking for her at this moment anyway.
The music still filled the air, and she fell into her steps easily only really focusing on what was going on between them. She noticed him return the smile at her admittance that she had missed him, even though she was sure that he had no real reason to be surprised. They had always been pretty good at admitting they missed one another, no matter the circumstances. It was one of the many things she loved about their relationship, she had never thought it would be so easy to admit that you missed another person, but she easily admitted it to X. She let out a small soft laugh when he said that talking over skype had been fun, but that real dates were better. She could have said something funny about how she hadn’t realized this was a date but she of course refrained because she was too happy to be funny right now anyway. She just wanted to focus on the fact that he was there, and they were together and that they were dancing. The rest of the room wasn’t all that important to her right now, well Dante was, but she was sure that if she tried to look for him now she wouldn’t find him. Even though she had made him promise that they would dance at least one song together because that was basically their tradition. But that of course would be for later, probably when she tried to go find him again. At his words she looked up at him, and she rolled her eyes at him for a second. It really hadn’t been fair that Dante knew he was coming, and of course it explained why he had been so interested in her dress, and everything that had concerned with the gala after he had convinced her that it was a good idea to go.
“You are lucky that I can’t say no to him at all. Well I can but usually I can’t” she said with a smile, “But that means you have to be nice and let me at least dance with him once tonight, he might take offense otherwise”

* * * * * * He rolled his eyes and lightly pressed her closer with the hand that was against her back. Thanks for the warning, but might I remind you that changing girlfriend rapidly isn't exactly a favourite sport of mine. Flirting, yes, and possibly something more than that, but always only with one at a time. Xavier didn't do multiple girls and right now, he honestly wasn't going to even consider another girl. He didn't know if he would ever consider her again, Bella was all he needed right now. The last time he had actually been in love, he had been hurt, which had lead to him falling back in love a little slower than usual, given his Casanova reputation. But a wounded dog always fears to get hurt again, and while he might not have showed it, that was precisely the case with him. Something even Pirzi would have been able to figure out if she had only stopped to think about it a bit. But allthe same, he smiled at Bella and lightly pressed his lips to her forehead again, just to let her silentl know that she didn't have to worry about anything right now. Not in the case of the girlfriends department. He'd told her before that he wasn't about to change his mind any time soon, and he was sticking to that.
The fact that she was giving him that little glare of hers again was definitely making him laugh. She was being unintentionally funny, which probably wasn't what she had in mind, but really, given her tiny size compared to his own, and even to Dante, well, it was honestly just hilarious. Still, Xavier couldn't help but grin and lean closer to steal a quick kiss on her lips. Dante's a good politic, if he manages to turn you around like that, he said with a smile on his face and a slight tightening of his hold on her. He could honestly not care less about the other people dancing around them, though he was sure some were stealing glances. Bella was by far too beautiful tonight to just ignore, and he was sure he would have to fend off some unwanted admirers by the end of the night. Her words made him chuckle though. It was sort of part of the deal. Don't worry, I won't be stealing you all to myself. It would hardly be fair and I'm sure Ellie'll want to talk to you too at some point tonight. He was always conscious of the fact that she had her own circle of friends which he didn't want to impose on, but then of course he was always just glad he could be in the same room as she was. Even if they weren't dancing together at the time. Swaying gently to the music, Xavier couldn't help but sigh in content as he let his cheek rest against the side of her head for a moment, closing his eyes and just enjoying this. He didn't know when the next time was going to be. By the way, think I could persuade you to walk with me a little after the waltz is over? he asked after a couple more silent moments, opening his eyes again and looking down at Bella with a soft smile. I want to get away from all the eyes just for a moment. And he didn't want that many eyes on them for a good reason, but of course he wasn't about to tell her that was he?

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She bit back the small giggle that wanted to escape her lips at his eye roll. He obviously hadn’t found her comment funny, but it did make her feel better to hear him say that girlfriend changing wasn’t something he liked to do. And she knew that he honestly wasn’t one to do that anyway, it had been one of the things she admired the most about him. When they had been friends, she had respected his ideals when it came to dating someone, no matter what his reputation had been, he never cheated on his girlfriends. Knowing this was what allowed her to trust him completely, even if they only saw each other when they had time. She closed her eyes when he kissed her forehead again, she wasn’t even really focusing on the people around them anymore. She realized that tended to happen a lot when she was with X, she just became so aware of him and his presence everything else seemed to just dissolve around her. She knew that for some people that might seem completely cliché, but she didn’t care because it was what she felt. Just like she felt completely safe when she was with him, even when there was no real need to even feel safe.
“I guess that brings us back to our no sharing policy” she said with a smile.
He was grinning at her when she gave him that look, she wasn’t sure what was funny about the look she was giving him but he obviously found it humorous. But of course that look completely dissolved the moment he kissed her, he really had this habit of making it impossible to be made at him for more than a second. He obviously used that habit to his advantage, as proven at this very moment. But she definitely understood that Dante was a good politic, and it was hard to be mad at him too. Sometimes she did get irritated at him, especially when he did stupid things but in the end she always found herself forgiving him. She could feel his hold tighten slightly, which was completely fine with her because she liked just standing this close to him. She nodded when he said that dancing with Dante was part of the deal, and he did have a point that she would definitely want to talk to Ellie later as well. But she was sure her best friend was pretty busy right now, if not dealing with Aubrey, maybe having a nice time with Alaric. She hoped it was the latter because her best friend needed to have fun too, Bella worried that the wedding preparations might be getting to her, especially with how close it all was. But she would focus on making sure her best friend was having a good time when she was done dancing with X, because she really wanted to take advantage of the fact that he was there with her. And zoning out on him definitely wasn’t the best idea. She looked up at him when he said if he could persuade her to take a walk with him, she was pretty sure he could convince her to do anything but she probably wouldn’t say that out loud. At his comment about the eyes, she did realize that some people were staring but then going back to whatever it was they were talking about. It made sense that they were staring, this was a school function and it was the first one they were at as a couple technically. But a walk did sound really nice, just as long as they stayed inside because she wasn’t appropriately dressed for the Montana cold.
“You definitely can persuade me to go walk with you”she said with a smile, “Just not outside because I might turn into a popsicle”

* * * * * * He smiled at her when she spoke, his dark eyes very warm and gentle. It does. I think we should write it down somewhere with Dante as witness. He was joking of course, he wasn't one that would need something like that written, it was encoded in the way he acted and in his personal morals. It wasn't like he was forcing her to be with him either, she wanted to be with him, and for that he was going to always be grateful. The way she didn't seem to mind when he pulled her closer made him smile, and he knew he would try to protect her from whatever and whoever. It was just who he was. Even during the shooting process, he had basically pushed Pirzi and Sergej out of the way and back into the coffee shop they'd been in right before the ordeal had started. If he had gone ahead without them, he would have been out without a scratch, but someone else might have gotten hurt … and he couldn't allow that. They had been going after him in any case, he couldn't phantom why, but it was there. And now that he was back on his own two feet and dancing with Bella, he knew he was going to always try and keep her safe. Dante didn't even have to extract that particular promise out of Xavier, really. He was going to do his best without even worrying too much about it. It was all about who you cared about, he would do anything for Dante as well. So it was all good.
Lifting his eyes when Bella spoke about Ellie, Xavier smiled when he saw the bforementioned girl dancing with the prince of Mexico. She looked like a fairy in her white dress, and he was sure her fiancé appreciated the effort. Your best friend looks happy, he told Bella, motioning in their direction and turning them so she could see what he was talking about, is she doing alright, what with the wedding and all? It wasn't a big affair, but invitations had already been sent out, and his own was currently pinned to the door of his wardrobe where he could see it all the time. His mother was making sure he wouldn't forget, because it would be bad for relations. Xavier just snorted. As if he would forget a former protege of the Kins getting married. He was a friend, despite not as close as he was with Dante, but still close enough. And allies were everything in this world today. Looking at Bella again when she agreed, he smiled and turned them away from the dancefloor, towards the edge, where he let go of her but kept hold of her hand as he slowly wound his way through the other students, those who were standing there that is. He greeted a couple of them and smiled in the direction of some others he could see that were catching his eyes, but then he was already out of the throng and in the hallway, taking a deep breath. Looking at Bella, he grinned and shrugged off his jacket, lightly draping it over her shoulders. No turning into a popsicle on me here, he teased her, before lightly pulling her close and just holding her there. He really had missed her, more than he could ever say, and he wanted her to know that, but words, for once, wouldn't come as he would have wanted them to. So instead he simply stood with her quietly for a moment, enjoying her presence and just … taking it all in. That he was really here. That he was fine, despite the fact his left hand still didn't feel right. That she was here too. And that they were together, above all that. After a couple quiet moments, he moved again. Come on, let's walk a little, he said with a smile, knowing that he would be able to persuade her to probably go anywhere with him, if he really wanted to.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- “Oh I’m sure Dante would love to witness that” she said with a small laugh.
This whole conversation was basically just about joking because she was sure there was no need to sign such a thing. She trusted him, and she was sure that he trusted her in return which was what mattered most in this situation. Dante obviously trusted him enough to not object to their relationship, that had been the one thing she had worried about shortly after her return from Italy. But he had reacted positively enough, even though he had been a little upset over the fact that she had not let him know about it after the ball. But everything had happened quickly enough, that by the time she gave it any real though she was already on her way to the airport. She still remembered how she thought about the whole situation on her way to Italy; she had still found it a little hard to believe. But here they were, months later and she couldn’t have been happier with him. Even though the majority of their time as a couple had been spent in different places, they had still managed to make it work. She was sure that a lot of people had expected them to have broken up by now, but she had no intention of even allowing her thoughts to go down that path.
“That’s the rule, I only told Alaric that he needed to make her happy because that was what mattered most to me” she said, “I think she’s faring pretty well, it is a royal wedding so that definitely adds more stress to it. But I’ve tried to be there for her, just to make the process simpler”
Bella only wanted her best friend to be happy, however that was achieved. It was why she had asked her multiple times if she really wanted to go through the wedding. After Ellie had reassured her about a dozen times, Bella had been satisfied enough to be able to serve as support for her. She had listened in on the queen planning Dante’s wedding and she knew that planning the whole affair would not be simple. But apparently the queen of Mexico had taken a lot of the load on herself, which left Ellie with less to freak out over. But even now, as she watched her best friend dance with Alaric, she realized that I would all be okay for her. Even though it had all basically come out of the blue, he was keeping his promise to her. And for that, she could only be thankful. But she turned her focus back to X, who was leading them out of the room now. This of course made her recall the last time he had pulled her away after dancing, and that had been at the masquerade. There weren’t that many people lingering in the hall as she initially expected, most of them were in the ballroom. Even though it was not that cold, she appreciated when he draped the jacket around her shoulders, it was kind of funny since it did reflect how much taller he was than her. They stood there for a few moments and she took in the silence, well you could still hear the music but it was soft. When he moved and said that they should walk a little, she let out a small laugh but nodded as an acceptance.
“I just realized you have a habit of pulling me away from things after we dance” she teased lightly, “But it’s okay because I just want to spend time with you, so a walk sounds like fun”

* * * * * * He gave her a grin, having known it would make her laugh, the way he joked about things. Xavier really enjoyed seeing her this carefree and happy, it was a side of Bella he could never get enough of. Well, there's no better way to test that theory than to put it in practice, he teased her gently, though of course by now it was moot point. After all, they had established the main focus which was that they wouldn't be sharing the other with anyone else. It was of course something natural. Xavier wasn't one to cheat and he never would, something he had proven to her time and time again already. He liked to pride himself on his ability to be in a lot of places in short amounts of time. Despite the fact that his schedule had shifted because of the Germany – France fiasco, he'd still managed to be on a plane to Italy in record time. Seeing Bella there and being able to spend time with her all alone, without the constant nagging of the paparazzi had been a treat he didn't know if he could ever repeat. Not soon, at least, though perhaps he would be able to persuade her to join him in Italy again soon. He was sure she had loved it there, and he himself had spent enough quiet time there to love it just because. Though he still needed to properly visit Venice once.
When talk turned back to Ellie, Xavier looked over Bella's head to where the former Belgium servant was dancing with her fiance. He met Ric's eyes over the distance and inclined his head in greeting, before turning back to Bella. That sounds like a fair deal to me. I'm sure Ric'll treat her well though, out of all the proteges we had last year, he was the only one who actually showed some morals. Between Dante, Fred and Romeo, you can be sure I had enough on my hands. Baste was just a nuisance half the time as well. He shook his head in good humor. But yes, a royal wedding was always a pain. He could relate to that, given his mother was still huffing and puffing and well, being as annoying as ever. She would still be for a while. But he was glad when Bella didn't object to being pulled aside and into the hallways. Unseen, as far as he was concerned, because the focus wasn't on him tonight, for once. Or so he hoped. Laughing softly, he playfully tugged on a free strand of her short hair. I just want to steal you and lock you away forever, schöne. But you wouldn't like that, so I have to improvise. His smile was warm when he took her hand and set a slow, even pace of their walk. Mainly it was just the two of them spending time together. They hadn't actually been alone like this since the last time she'd visited him at the hospital in New Hampshire, and that hardly counted. He hadn't been himself then. Pushing against a door that he knew would lead out into the gardens, but it was still a more enclosed space which meant it wasn't as cold as properly out, just fresh, Xavier inhaled deeply, feeling himself relax as he pulled Bella close against him, wrapping his arms around her. Above them, the sky was clear for once, the stars twinkling down. You know, I didn't think I'd be able to make it tonight, for a long time, he confessed after a moment, looking down at her again, my doctors weren't all that optimistic. My left hand still doesn't close as it should. But, I'm stubborn. I needed to come tonight. His dark eyes searched for Bella's in the dim light shining through the door they'd left open behind them.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She smiled and let out a small laugh letting him know that it probably would be a good way but she was fine either way. She knew that she would never want to share him with anyone, and he had made it clear that he felt the same way. She wasn’t the type of person to condone infidelity and she knew that he would never cheat on her anyway. If anything these past few months, he had been so attentive to her even if they had been so far away from one another. He had managed to surprise her twice already, and both times she had been thrilled with him being there. He had the tendency to send her presents, even though she had no need for any of that, but the gesture was still sweet. He had done so much in the past few months, she was pretty sure that he was one of a kind. No one had ever treated her like he did, and she felt all the more special whenever she was around him. Even their first time as a couple outside of prying eyes had been perfect, even if it had been a little bit short. Italy had been much more fun with him there, and she was sure that if she went back she’d only really remember the memories they mad created there.
She nodded when X said that Ric was probably the one with the most morals. She was well aware that Dante, and the other two boys that she shared a dorm room with didn’t have the highest morals. All three of them had somehow managed to get themselves in some sort of problem because of a bad decision they made. But Ric had always been the calm one, She trusted that he would try his best to make Ellie happy, which was what mattered to Bella most of all. She was being the most supportive best friend she could be, even though it would be a little weird to think that her best friend was going to be married and that she was going to be a princess and future queen of Mexico. She had joked with Ellie about how she was going to transform into this really important person and forget all about Bella. IT had been a joke after all, because she knew her best friend wouldn’t change. She would still be the same Ellie, even after all of these changes. But she looked up at him as they slipped away, no one seemed to notice which was good because it was easier to slip away when you weren’t missed.
“Oh that might be kind of scary” she said, “Would I have books in this place? Because then it might not be too bad”
She knew that X would never even dream of locking her up anywhere because this wasn’t medieval times when it was okay to do things like that. But she focused on him, as he took her hand and she walked with him. The pace was slow, which allowed them to take in their surroundings, the air was chilly and she was glad that X’s jacket was keeping her warm. But she also hoped they didn’t take too long because even though he was fine now, she didn’t want him to start getting cold and then end up getting sick. She looked at him as he spoke, she knew that she was glad that he was there with her. But she would have been completely okay if he wouldn’t have been able to make it. What was most important to her was that he was okay, even if it would have meant waiting a few more weeks to see him. She looked down at his hand, concerned because it looked fine to her. But of course the damage was all internal, but she had a feeling he would be okay. It had only been a little over two months, he still had plenty of time to recover and he would be one hundred percent okay.
“I would have been completely okay if you wouldn’t have come tonight X” she said as she gave him a smile, “All I want is for you to get one hundred percent better and even if it would have meant waiting to see you for a few more weeks, I would have been okay with it. So you didn’t need to feel like you had to come, even if I’m glad you did”

* * * * * * Her laugh was defintiely something he aspired towards, it was something he wanted to hear almost all the time. Xavier made it his goal to make sure Bella was happy, because he knew it was stressful on her as well when they couldn't see each other every day. Knowing Vineheart and the scenery, she would be surrounded by couples all the time, and it could make her feel sad because he was away in New Hampshire at Dartmouth campus. But this was where his ingenuity came in, and also the fact that Pirzi was still in Montana. His twin was of enormous help when it came down to it, and she'd also said she had his back on this and would kee pan eye out for Bella if needed, not that he anticipated anything weird. But he simply wanted to make sure everything was okay and that his girlfriend was happy, which was why he always remembered to send her a present now and then, smallish things, funny things, maybe even just picture messages of whatever he and his servant were doing. One time he'd sent her one of them right before the other guy had tossed him off a bridge when they'd gone bungee jumping. That one had been hilarious, though of course no one in his entourage thought the same. But oh well. So long as Bella was happy and he could surprise her though Xavier was also happy. And he was making sure that he did all he could to be in her presence whenever.
At her words though, he had to laugh, and pull her close against him, wrapping his arms around her gently and pressing his lips down to her own. Lots and lots of books, he murmured finally, letting go of the kiss, enough books to last you a lifetime, including all your favourites. He had the cheeky smile on his face though, which meant that he was clearly joking. Keeping hold on her as he turned to look up into the sky for a moment, he sighed when he heard her reassure him again, though of course it wasn't something they agreed on. I know, Bells. But I wanted to be here. And I was going to be, even if I had to bring the whole army with me for protection. He reached up to cup her cheek gently, letting his thumb brush across the skin he felt there and just gazed into her eyes for a moment. Oddly enough, he could feel himself becoming calm, like something normal was going to happen. There were no nerves or anything, just the perpetual calm and serenenity that he always felt whenever he was in Bella's close proximity. She had that effect on him and to be honest he wouldn't have it any other way. I brought you something, by the way, he said after a minute, and almost automatically reached for the pocket on the inside of his coat, which obviously wasn't there, since Bella was wearing his jacket. He chuckled to himself and gently parted the jacket to reach for the thing, lightly brushing his fingers across her skin. They were standing very close to each other, but it wasn't nearly close enough, yet it would do for the time being. Xavier was simply enjoying the moment and drinking in every single second, every single expression or the spark in her eyes. She was easily the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen in his life. And the fact that she had been there for him after the assassination attempt also spoke of a lot. His fingers grasped what he'd been going for and he brought the box out onto the palm of his hand, holding it for her to take. From the inside, the melody of the ball could still be heard, but outside, there was nothing except the small noises the garden made when it was deeply asleep.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She was pretty sure she was happier with him, for some reason she always found herself just feeling really relaxed and very happy. It was fun, to not have to worry about being completely perfect to him because he knew her pretty well now. He didn’t mind any of her weird quirks, because she knew she had a lot of them. Starting from the fact that she always looked at everything so logically, to the fact that she still had a teddy bear from when she was a little girl. He hadn’t completely laughed at her when she had introduced the bear to him, and he had no idea how much that had meant to her. Dante put up with her because they were like siblings, he was used to all of her quirks and just habits overall. But X had no real reason to accept any of those things, but he did so very willingly even when they had just been friends. And she appreciated everything he did for her, even though it was hard to be away from him for so long, they communicated constantly and he had the tendency to send her little gifts that she always found adorable. The pictures he sent her sometimes made her laugh, and she was just glad to know what he was doing, and that he was enjoying New Hampshire.
“That does sound rather appealing” she said with a smile, “But I think I prefer my freedom, books aside”
She really didn’t even focus on the fact that it was kind of cold outside. His jacket was keeping her warm, and of course given his size he always tended to give off more body heat. There was that and the fact that they were pretty close together right now too. She looked up at him as he replied to what she said, and she smiled at his response. She wasn’t sure what she had done to get him to be so sweet with her, but he always talked like that to her, and his words always made her feel so nice. She put her hand on top of the one he had on her cheek, and she gave it a squeeze so he would know that she appreciate everything he did for her. Just being here right now, it meant so much to her. She gave him a curious look when he said that he had brought her something. Christmas wasn’t for another few weeks, so it was too early for him to be giving her any type of present. And it wasn’t like she really needed any type of present when he was there with her, but she was still a little bit curious. She watched him as he reached for something, it was probably in his coat because he then reached forward and retrieved whatever it was that he was looking for from his jacket. It was a small box, it could honestly hold anything and the curiosity was getting the best of her. She wasn’t even really aware of the fact that the gala was still going on inside, she was only really focused on him. She realized she hadn’t even said anything, and she wasn’t really reaching for the box either. She really wanted to know what was inside of it, she could probably guess earrings or something nice like that. But the fact that he had gotten her something, and his present was still in her room, waiting to be wrapped did make her feel a little bad. But of course she hadn’t been expecting to see him until right before Christmas at least, so she hadn’t been adequately prepared.
“Isn’t it too early for presents?” she asked, “Christmas isn’t for two more weeks”

* * * * * * Xavier laughed softly when she spoke again, and hugged her close. I'd never lock you up; you're too precious for that. Besides, her locked up wasn't an image he wanted to picture in his head, even if it were a golden cage. Cages were something to be abolished, though granted there was no real way to do that in the first place. There were just some things that couldn't b changed, among them these cages. But for now he was only joking with Bella anyway, because he knew she would understand. They'd known each other for more than a year now, they'd been through a couple of tough spots together and he was pleased to say that she was slowly getting under his skin. She knew him. Sometimes better than he knew himself, even if she wouldn't admit it out loud. But the way she calmed him down whenever he needed it, with her logical and rational thinking, it made him wonder whether he was insane for not having looked at her earlier on. All the other girls he'd either dated or flirted with, they had the adrenaline going for them, yes, but at the same time that didn't help tone him down. Bella did, however. She made sure, even without doing anything, that he was on his best behaviour and trying to please the people he was currently with. Or one well-placed word would calm his temper. She probably had a lot of practice from Dante though.
He watched her as she eyed him and the box that he pulled out of his coat pocket, ballancing it on the palm of his hand. Xavier could feel the beginnings of a soft smile as she started battling against him. When it came to presents, she was oky so long as the price tags were low or zero. As soon as he even attempted to slip something a little more pricey into the mix, she would basically throw a tantrum at his head. Literally. But this time around, there was no way she could just ignore what he was about to offer her. And curiously enough, he still wasn't nervous. Nervous really wasn't something he did, if he was entirely honest with himself. Yeah, but this present can't really wait till Christmas, he told her gently, the smile still in place as he reached with his other hand, slowly clicking the button on the box so it would open easily. It did, and once it did it revealed the ring inside, the one he'd taken so much time in choosing. The stone had had to be replaced in any case, because he had wanted her birthstone to go with the band, and it had taken him a while to procure it. But in the end it was worth the trouble, he was sure it would bee ven as his smile turned even softer, if possible. I bought a ring for someone once, he said softly, remembering the blast of ROYALSCANDAL last year, and our annoying gossip blog took it for an engagement ring, which it really wasn't. Just a promise ring. His dark eyes looked down at the ring in the box. This time though, I think even the gossip blog might get it right. Because this time, it's not a promise ring. He lifted his eyes back to Bella's. I know we haven't know each other for as long as you've known Dante, or Ellie. And I know we haven't really been together all that long. But in all my years at Vineheart, and all the escapades people assume are linked to me outside of that, I've never met a girl who could affect me the way you do. His voice was strong, and collected, and sincere. I never thought I'd want to go through any length for anyone outside of my own family; but when you flew to New Hampshire after I was shot, I knew I would, for you. Xavier took a breath, and shifted his body, slowly bending one knee and lowering himself down before her, carefully balancing the box in his hand, never taking his eyes off the girl he loved. Isabella Liliana Ortega, he asked, careful to pronounce her name right, will you marry me?
