-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Cathleen closed her laptop with a snap as she looked at the clock she had ten minutes to make herself presentable. The conversation she had just had with Mattie was not at all what she had been expecting, and it also made her a little nervous. She knew there had been some change between them in the past weeks, but she had always taken it as it all being a result of Mat’s flirty nature. After all that’s who he was, he was a major flirt, and she got good at flirting back at him. But the possibility of him liking her as more than a friend had never really occurred to her, even though she knew about her feelings on the matter. She knew she had liked him as more than a friend for a while, but of course his friendship was too important to her to even attempt at thinking of anything else.
She grabbed the first outfit she could find, with the snow melting it wasn’t necessary to wear tights under her skirt so she just put on some boots, she grabbed her bag and her coat and made her way to her desk to leave a note for Margherita in case she came back in to find her gone. Once she was done with that she left, closing the door shut behind her as she made her way towards the first floor. She wasn’t sure if Mattie would already be waiting for her, or if they were staying on campus for ice cream. All that really mattered was to clear up this whole situation because it was one thing to talk online, but a completely different to talk face to face. She finally reached the first floor, and she settled on one of the benches, not realizing she had taken less time than usual to get ready.

Signing out of the school wide chat, Matvei sighed. Well, that was not quite how he wanted to do things, and Ana would probably kick his butt for even starting the conversation that way, but he had not known what else to do. Every time he got around Cathleen, he got nervous. He had never had problems talking to her before, but now that he had begun developing feelings for his best friend, he was always scared he was going to screw something up. She meant a lot to him, and their friendship would always be the most important thing, but he could not just go on with his life as if what he was feeling did not exist. He had texted for a couple of days about the dilemma with Ana, and it was pretty much a do or die thing at this point. Getting off of his bed, he shrugged on the closest T shirt he could find. His jeans were rumpled from laying around in the bed all day. Today had been a not so productive day on his end, and he felt lazy because of it. He knew it was still cold outside, so he was not sure how much sense going for ice cream meant in the middle of the winter, but it had been the first thing he had thought of. Slipping into his blue tennis shoes, and grabbing a gray hooded sweatshirt that was draped over his chair, he made his way out of the dorm room and to the first floor. Completely forgetting his phone, that was the last thing on his mind at this point. He made his way rather quickly, and saw her sitting on a bench. Coming up in front of her, he sat down beside her. ”Cath…” He said softly.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She fidgeted with her phone slightly, the nerves were getting to her again. She was still trying to make clear what Mattie had told her over the chat. It honestly would have gone better if he hadn’t of ended up saying anything because she knew that really wasn’t the type of conversation they should have been having over the chat room in the first place. Either way she knew they had to talk about this, especially if he seemed to be on the same boat as she was. She was just a bit afraid of bringing up the subject because of what it could mean for them. After all he was her best friend, and she wasn’t sure what she’d do if she ever lost him. He’d been one of those constant people in her life and she didn’t want to lose that. She was caught up in her thoughts that she almost missed when he arrived, but she saw the movement in her peripheral vision especially when he spoke. She turned her attention to him, reflexively learning over to take his hand.
“I was starting to think you were going to stand me up Mattie” she said with a smile.
She knew he would never do that, but she hoped that her little joke would help the situation. She wasn’t even sure how they were going to breach the subject now that they were face to face. After all he had kept it quiet constantly, even though they had spent a lot of time together since the term had started. But still whatever happened, she just wanted to make sure that she wouldn’t lose him as a friend, because he was just that important to her. Yes she had feelings for him, and she would very openly admit it, now that she was aware that he seemed to feel the same way. But still they needed to make sure that they were both willing to cross that friendship line, but make sure that they’d still be able to be best friends after this as well. Because even if they did start dating, she didn’t want to lose him as her best friend either.
“So where were we?” she said after a few seconds.

The Irish princess and Russian prince had been best friends for forever. He had fought over and over with his mind and his heart, as they were in complete disagreement on the matter, for a good bit of time lately. It had finally gotten to the point where he just had to talk to someone, and he had chosen Ana. Mat basically had surmised that he needed to confront Cathleen about his feelings, and then they could decide how to proceed. He knew that if he didn’t tell her what he was feeling, that he would regret it and he tried not to live his life with any of those. This could either completely ruin their friendship, or only strengthen it by them continuing forward as more. He had been praying madly for the second option. If he ever lost her, he didn’t know what he would do. Cath was his best friend, and without her in his life, he just would only be half a person. Feeling her hand close around his, he smiled at her words. ”You know that’s the last thing I would ever do to you.” Now that they were here, and in the moment, he was frozen. Since the break was over and school was back in session, they had spent more time than usual together, but most of it he was on eggshells because he didn’t want to cross any lines that they hadn’t discussed yet. Here was the time to get the ball rolling, and he knew once this started, there would be no turning back. Sighing, he looked to her. ”Cath, you’re my best friend. But you’re more than that now.” He said softly. He had practically poured his heart out to her already, but he knew there was just something about it happening in person that made it more real, more permanent. ”I’ve struggled with these feelings for a while now, and I’ve never been able to just tell you. I’ve been afraid of what it would mean for us, for you, for me… especially if you didn’t feel the same way.”

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Cath had never been good at reading signs, she was always afraid that she was reading into things too much. It was why she had been so insistent that they have this conversation face to face, because no matter how frightening it would be, it would help her feel much better about it. She had been very aware of what Mattie had admitted, and the repercussions of her telling him she didn’t feel the same way. Especially considering the fact that the latter would have been a complete and utter lie. She knew she had feelings for him, that went beyond those of friendship but she had tried her best to suppress them in fear that it would complicate things for them unnecessarily. But here they were, and she was pretty sure she was willing to take the step forward if she was certain Mattie would. She smiled when he said he would never do that to her, and she knew he was telling her the truth.
She waited for him to start talking, and the nerves were still there and it was secretly eating at her because she wanted him to say what he had told her through the chat. She was sure it would be so much more real if she heard him say it, even though it would still be kind of hard to believe for her anyway. Still she was very aware of their surroundings when Mattie started talking and she was kind of relieved that they were alone. People were either already out and about doing their own things, or they were in their rooms for which she was grateful. The last thing she wanted to deal with was an audience, even though she was sure that it would probably end up on the stupid school gossip blog anyway. But she allowed herself to focus on Mat, and what he was saying to her even though she was basically hearing what she had read earlier. It was still pretty weird to hear him saying what she herself was feeling.
“Mattie you know you are one of the most important people in my life, and it’s because of that reason that I never bothered to let you know when my own feelings changed” she said as she gave his hand a light squeeze once again, “I was afraid that you’d find one of the other girls who wanted you much more appealing, especially because you’ve been my best friend. But you never have to worry about rejection from me Mattie. Ever”

Face to face, there was no way either of them could escape their true feelings for the other. It was harder to lie when you were confronted head on. This conversation was one he had replayed in his head over and over, but he knew that it would not go any way it had been planned. Now, they were in the moment and after this, their future would be sealed. Matvei knew he was giving Cathleen the power to make his life a lot brighter, or break his heart into a few hundred pieces. Knowing that her feelings mirrored his own made talking about it a lot easier. There was so much he wanted to say, yet he couldn’t find the right words – everything just kind of tumbled out in a frenzy as he tried to make sense of what was unfolding between them – not caring if anyone was around, but thankful that they were alone. As she spoke, it seemed as though his heart stopped, and the only thing he could hear was the sound of her voice. As she squeezed his hand, he gripped it tight, not letting go. He raised her hand to his lips and he kissed it lightly, just as he had in greeting her dozens of times, but this time was different. ”Cath, there has never been another girl to even come close to you. Surely you’ve figured out by now that my world revolves around you.” He unwrapped his fingers that were intertwined with her own and put his arm around her, pulling her as close as he could to him. Cupping her face with his free hand, he leaned down and kissed her forehead gently. ”I want you in my life, no matter what we decide. You will always be my best friend before anything else, but I would love to try this as something more.”

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She knew it was hard to lie to someone when you were facing them. That’s why she had insisted that they do this face to face. She needed him to be sure of what he was saying. After all he was such and important part of her life that she wasn’t sure if she was willing to just let him go if something went wrong. She was pretty sure that her own sister would strangle her if she told her that Mattie had admitted he had feelings for her and she just let him go on thinking she didn’t feel the same way. Because it would be like lying to him and she didn’t ever want to lie to him. She knew the risk they were taking when they started to go down this path, but she also had faith that it would all turn out all right.
She felt him grip her hand tighter, and that might have bothered her at another time but she was trying to make sure that he understood what she was saying. Still she focused on what he was saying, and she could feel the blush creeping on to her skin. She wouldn’t have ever thought she’d hear him say those types of things. He had been her best friend forever, and she had always thought he’d end up with one of the many girls who often vied for his attention. After all she was pretty sure there were about a dozen girls who wanted to date him, yet here he was telling her that his world revolved around her. She felt a lot better about where they were going with this when he said that she would always be his best friend. It made her feel better knowing that no matter what happened, they would always have the bond of friendship. Even if it evolved into something else, she knew she could count on him.
“Which leaves only one question Mattie” she said as she looked at him, “Why haven’t you kissed me?”

Whatever is meant to be will always find a way, how many times was that particular phrase thrown around? The Irish princess and Russian prince had been friends for what seemed like forever, depending on who you asked, and Matvei knew their friendship could survive anything. Taking Cathleen as his date to the winter gala had just sealed the deal on what feelings he had been trying to figure out. She had been right about one thing – there were countless girls constantly surrounding him, but he had never considered placing one of them into his life because the only females he was constantly around were his sister and the Irish princesses. Sure, he had his boy nights with Gabe and Aramis, and his roommate bonding time with Cris, and there was always soccer with Dragan but he hardly had time outside of all that for dating. Being a part of the Kings of Vineheart, he was not short on female attention, but now that he had been honest with Cath it felt like a huge burden had been lifted off of him. He didn’t have to worry about impressing other girls, or trying to keep what he felt for her to himself anymore. Of course their friendship would always be the most important thing to him and keep intact because without a friendship, the two of them would never make it. ”You’re so beautiful.” He told her softly, letting go of her hand and wrapping an arm around her, pulling her close to him. Looking down at her, he kissed her forehead and murmured softly against it. ”I never wanted you to pull away, or run off from me. I’ve wanted to for so long; can I change the fact that I haven’t now?” He didn’t really wait for an answer, but felt her nod as soon as his free hand reached up to cup her face and pull her closer to him. He let his lips meet hers softly and the sparks he felt within his body was unlike anything he had ever experienced.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- She was pretty sure almost everyone was aware of their feelings for one another before they were even aware of it themselves. She got teased enough by her sister to know it, but it wasn’t like she hadn’t had anything to lose. After all her friendship with Mattie had always been so important to her, and she had always been afraid to do something to disturb that friendship, but here they were. And it was like they were agreeing upon the fact that no matter what happened, their friendship would survive it all. And she didn’t want to be negative, she knew that a relationship with Mattie would probably work a million times better than a relationship with anyone else. No one understood her like he did, and she had never been anyone else with him. He knew her well, and that’s why she felt so comfortable around him, because he was one of those constants in her life.
But still she could still feel the heat rising to her face, at their close proximity and just at what was going on. She was glad that there was no one around right now because she was sure that they would be staring at them. Either way she was just glad that they were talking now, and that they were fixing this. She smiled at him when he said that she was beautiful, even though she was pretty certain that he was entirely biased. It felt nice to be so close to him, and she just closed her eyes for a second, just enjoying the moment and listening to what he was saying. She could understand what he was saying, and it made sense, and it had actually been kind of hard to say what she had said. After all she had been afraid that if she didn’t say something, he might have never done it. When his lips met hers, she basically melted into him. This was probably the best kiss she had ever had, and she found herself not caring if the whole school decided to come watch now, because all that mattered was that he was there with her.

The rush of emotion that washed over him as he held Cathleen in his arms and they kissed for the first time was like turning on a light in a tunnel that you had been wandered through without realizing there was indeed a light beside you the whole time. The two had attended practically every event Vineheart had had together since they had become best friends. Asking Cathleen to be his “date” had always just been easier than having to reject all of the other girls who would be waiting for him to ask them. He had been talking with Ana a lot over the past few weeks, trying to piece together exactly what was going on for him in regards to Cath. Ana had basically told him you’ll never know til you try, and so here they were. He was worried that she may have thought he took her for granted because she was always there; she’d been by his side throughout all of his antics, not always approving, but never trying to change him. The moment their lips touched, it was all over for him. He knew that there would never be anyone who could come close to her and what she meant to him or how she made him feel. There had been rumors swirling around about what was really going on with the two of them after the Winter Gala, but they both just shrugged the rumors off. They were best friends first, and nothing would ever disturb that connection. Pulling out of the kiss as it faded off, he smiled as he brought his lips to her ear to whisper to her softly. ”So, is that a yes to being my girlfriend?” He said with a grin, as he pulled away from her reluctantly, but still holding her close. The whole world could have been watching them, but all there was in that moment was him, and her, and he was okay with that.
