She had spent the majority of the afternoon hanging out with Aurelia at the carnival and it had been fun. Obviously this had been a good idea on the school’s behalf because it allowed the students to let loose in a way that was safe. Well it wasn’t like anyone at Vineheart had a real problem with going out and partying, but this had been a rather fun activity. They had ridden most of the rides and played a good amount of games, she even ended up winning a stuffed animal. It was small and she was sure that the guy at the booth had given it to her because she was cute and not because she had knocked down one of the bottles. But hey she was pretty sure that those games were meant to be hard, so she hadn’t felt too disappointed when she only knocked down one bottle. Plus it wasn’t like she had the best hand/eye coordination when she was throwing things, there was a reason that she had nearly hit at least three people with a book when she was frustrated. So she carried around the cute little stuffed puppy with a small sense of pride as she continued towards the trees.
She had run into someone else earlier in the evening and for some reason she ended up feeling rather tired after the encounter. After all she hadn’t even said a word to Markus since the day they broke up, and of course she made the vow to never let a boy use her in that way. But she was trying to just shrug off the feeling because she wanted to remain positive. She would be going back home for spring break and she was hoping that with the distance and just being away from Vineheart would help her forget certain actions she had done in the past few weeks. She had avoided him after the kiss, she had been drunk, albeit not THAT drunk, but still it had made her a little less inhibited. And if you thought about it she was already uninhibited enough when she was sober, so being somewhat drunk was not a good thing. Obviously she had avoided tutoring sessions since then, she had wanted to leave a note, but it wasn’t like something she could just write down. After all you couldn’t just write, sorry I kissed you, I will now be avoiding out tutoring sessions, even though that would have been an interesting note to write. Either way she was hoping that everything would blow over in the two weeks she would be back, and just maybe pretend that it was the booze’s fault and that it wasn’t something she wanted to repeat. Even if it had been something she would have loved to repeat, at that thought she scolded herself she shouldn’t have been thinking that way. She paused for a second, she was near the edge of the carnival now and she was approaching the surrounding woods, and it would allow her to lean against a tree. She let out a small sigh as she cuddled the stuffed puppy closer to her as she looked up at the sky, it was clear, so the moon sort of sucked her in. She pushed off of the tree, deciding that it would be a good idea to head back inside, but she was still stuck in her thoughts she hadn’t realized she was walking straight into until she finally spotted them in her peripheral vision.
“Sorry” she muttered absentmindedly as she looked up to the person, unaware of who it was until it was too late.

In all honesty, he’d never been one for carnivals, mostly because of the fact that he preferred being in his office and working his way through whatever the runes before him presented, and it didn’t seem like he was going to change his mind soon. Except, he didn’t exactly have enough patience to really sit still today, or even work through some of the new images his old professor had sent him from the excavation site about the new colony. Or old one, whichever way you looked at it. New in terms of discovery and old because it was definitely prehistoric. Derek sighed softly and rubbed his temples before he stood and took the sweater he normally only wore when he was trying to get some good ideas, and pulled it over his head before exiting his office and deciding it would do him good to actually go and visit the carnival. The kids were obviously having fun, and then there was the fact that he was getting a bit hungry, so he needed to find some food for himself somewhere at some point. There was just something about a hungry person that didn’t sit well with him. The school was mostly empty at this time, because students were all kind of at the carnival or out in general, and he wouldn’t blame them. Shaking his head at the thoughts going through it, Derek whistled a tune as he exited the main building and made his way to where he knew the carnival would be located. It would take him some time to get there, since he would walk, but there was nothing against good excercise in his books, and he was in need of it recently. He’d been doing way too much sitting down as it were.
His thoughts turned to the fact that the person he’d been tutoring in math had kind of skipped and avoided their last tutoring sessions, and he knew the reason for it. It would cost him his job if it ever went out public, and it would cost her to be expelled, or worse, her job with the Bulgarian princess as well. He didn’t want to think about that. Kissing Katerina had been all kinds of wrong, but that hadn’t stopped him, had it? Sure she’d taken him by surprise, but that was no real excuse. He was older than her, more mature, he should have really thought about it and pulled away when he’d seen her leaning in. It would have been that easy. At the same time, however, the nagging feeling told him that he had wanted it to happen, that the tension between them had had to have escalated to the point of no return at some time or other, and maybe it was best that it was now instead of later. Who knew what would happene eventually. But he was glad that Kat had avoided some of their lessons together, because he needed to come to terms with everything himself, without really troubling her through it. There was something about her that made him want to think that he should really have used his brains more than his reflexes that night, or maybe he should have listened to her and let her go to her room on her own. She’d seemed capable enough, minus the whole stumbling factor. Shaking his head at himself, Derek forced himself not to think directly of that as he finally entered the carnival grounds and randomly strolled through them, greeting the people he knew, mostly students, though he could see some co-workers here as well, and he was sure Norris’ daughter was running just up ahead. It was definitely a nice sight, but it was getting too crowded, something he found out as soon as he rounded a corner, which made him back away and seek a quieter place for himself and his thoughts. He wasn’t really looking where he was going, though he was keeping loose tabs on what surrounded him, so he was just angling away from another person coming at him when that person bumped into him, more or less, causing him to reach out in case they needed to steady themselves. The voice brought him out of his reverie though. That’s no problem, but you really need to stop apologising, he said, looking down at Kat.

She was now wishing that she had been looking at where she was going. Here she was thinking that she was going to avoid seeing him until she got back from vacation, and she had been planning on having some sort of reason as to why she acted the way she had that night. Then again she was very aware that the action had spoken for itself, but she had been hoping she’d be able to brush it off as something she did because she was intoxicated and not because there was some hidden meaning. Especially because he had, if she recalled correctly, kissed her back briefly. Now she was pretty sure that had been maybe a reflex, after all you didn’t normally push away people that kissed you. Even if they were your very intoxicated students. She had been hoping that she would be able to brush it off, and pretend it never happened. She had even been prepared to avoid him for the remainder of the year and she could have hopefully passed math in the process. But of course as fate wanted to remind her at this particular moment it was kind of hard to avoid one of your professors. Especially when you went to boarding school.
She tensed slightly as he steadied her a bit, and she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do. If she did something stupid, there was no way she could blame it on being intoxicated because she was very aware of her surroundings right now and of course there wasn’t a drop of alcohol in her system. Damn the stupid school, it was their fault why did they have to hire such attractive young teachers. They had to know that putting teachers with that level of hotness in a school full of hormonal teenagers was a disaster waiting to happen. But of course she was sure no one had even attempted what she had, and she could only scold herself even more over what she had done that night. She didn’t regret that she had kissed him, because she was sure there would always be a part of her that was glad she did. But the more she analyzed her actions the more she realized that she had done something very wrong. After all if anyone would have seen them, he would have gotten fired for sure, and she would have been in a heap of trouble. She was pretty sure her job was secure in that sense, but she could have easily gotten expelled for kissing a professor. Especially because it wasn’t like he had initiated the kiss, it had been all her. She took a nervous step back, for some reason she was having issues looking him in the eye. She felt like a little school girl, and this was irritating for her because she hadn’t been this way around anyone in years. Back when she had lost her innocence and her faith in true love and all of that jazz. She had been pretty confident from the moment that Markus had broken her heart, but here she was, reverted back to that silly girl she had once been.
“It’s kind of hard not to apologize when you are responsible for some things, I could have very easily knocked someone down, spacing out the way I did” she said, looking down at the stuffed dog with a sudden fascination.

To be sure, Derek had kissed her back. Only for a brief moment, but he had kissed her back, and that was the one thing about this whole affair that was scaring him the most. There was no way in hell that he would ever let anyone know about that, not even his closest friend here at the Academy. And of course he wasn’t about to tell any of this to Klara, though he considered her as an older sister figure most of the time. But he certainly didn’t think she would approve of his actions, even on reflex. Good teachers didn’t necessarily go around returning students’ kisses like he had, not that he did it on a dayly basis, but once was quite enough without any additional trouble. He could honestly say that he was glad no one had been there to witness it, because he would have definitely been in HUGE trouble at that point, and even more so because she was just before graduation herself, and expelling her would have been a shame. But they would have definitely done something with him, more than just in the nick of time, Norris would have had his head spiked on a wall before the day was done. The headmaster was strict and very very old-fashioned about what was and what wasn’t to be done at the school he ran, despite the fact that he was only a couple of years older than most of his staff members. But he WAS older, and that was what counted in the authority factors, and that was enough to let Derek know he needed to watch himself with the other guy. Liam had told him as much, and Julian, well, Julian had basically told him to keep to himself and not worry too much about the Norris dude ... until he came breathing down your neck.
His attention returned to Kat, given that she had been the one to bump into him in the first place, and he wondered whether she’d actually intended that one, but it seemed highly unlikely. She couldn’t have known he was going to come here at all, as he hadn’t known it until a last-minute decision, and she couldn’t have known either that he was going to be walking in this direction. Unless she had turned into a kid spy by this point, but he doubted it. So no, this had been purely an accident, and Derek was going to treat it as such. It was going to be difficult and awkward enough as it were, though he wasn’t about to call her out on the kiss just yet. She seemed to agonized to really worry about that right now, and he wondered whether he’d only just had the feeling that she was trying to avoid him. Somehow, there seemed to be more truth in that than before, now that he actually got to see her in person. As far as her body language went, she wanted to be anywhere but in his close presence, and the stuffed toy in her hands seemed more fascinating than anything else she could look at. That, in itself would have been sign enough. You might find that I’m not quite so delicate that you could knock me over, he pointed out in a mildly amused tone of voice on that fact. Maybe if he could get her to relax a little bit, then she wouldn’t feel like she needed to bolt. That meant no mentioning the kiss unless she brought it up herself, but Derek was quite content in not doing that on his own accord. For his part, it was over and done with. Spring break couldn’t come sooner this year. So no need to worry on that account. Are you alright? Somehow, he always seemed to ended up asking about her welfare, though he was sure she wasn’t about to topple over herself this time around. The last time the stairs had been in her way, though she hadn’t exactly been coordinated on solid ground either, but he attributed that one to drink.

She honestly wished that the ground would just eat her up right now, because she was sure anything would have been better than her current situation. Okay so the longer she stared at him the more embarrassed she was becoming because she kept on thinking about the stupid kiss. Even though she was sure it had been a rather huge mistake, and it had been more of an impulse on her behalf. Well okay she normally didn’t care if she did stupid things, but this time she had done a stupid thing that involved a teacher. Oh goodness, she really needed to stop thinking about this now. If she kept on thinking about it, she was going to get to the point where she would just panic and well that would not be a good sight. She was pretty sure that it would freak him out as well, and she didn’t really need to do that right now. She wondered if he was going to scold her about her actions that night, after all she was pretty sure she deserved to be scolded. And this was the first time she was seeing him since the incident, just because she had been so good at just avoiding him all together until now. And here she was hoping she’d be able to avoid him completely until after spring break.
“Right, I should still learn to watch where I’m going” she said, still not looking at him.
At his question, she looked up for a second. Was she alright? Well the answer to that question could very well be no. But it wasn’t like she was going to tell him that, because she was having enough issues with her words. Darn this stupid crush on him, making her feel like that little love struck girl she had been all those years ago. This wasn’t her anymore, she was more confident when it came to guys now and she didn’t have any reason to get all nervous around a professor. After all he was her teacher, and nothing more. There could never be anything else, she knew that, even though she knew that she wished it was a different way. But it wasn’t like she could do much about it now, and if she was honest it was rather tempting to just walk away and pretend she hadn’t bumped into him. But of course would have been rude and if there was one thing that Kat wasn’t, it was rude. She could basically hear her mother scolding her if she ever even thought about being rude. Still she found herself fidgeting with the stuffed toy in her hand, as she found herself wishing that she could be eaten up by the ground again. Oh well she had to just get over it, maybe if she just answered nicely and they kept this conversation up nicely for a few minutes, she could retreat. She could retreat to a place where she didn’t have to look at him, and where she wouldn’t have to feel like a total spazz.
“I’m fine thank you” she said, “I was just not expecting to bump into you, at least not until after spring break”

She was being pretty admirably adorable right now, although it was trouble enough to think about it, let alone allow it to carry him away like that. He couldn’t afford it. The job at Vineheart was too important right now, and he needed the money if he wanted to someday go back to his original idfea, which was archaeology and ancient languages. He was a valuable asset when it came to old stuff, though right now he was in a tight spot and couldn’t be on any excavation sites, as much as he’d want to be. So instead of doing what he had to, he’d gone and found himself in an awkward position with one of his students, which didn’t help matters. Little wonder that she’d been avoiding him for the past week or so. There was just something about the situation that made thinking about it all the more worse, and Derek would be the first to say that he had certainly made a mistake and he wasn’t about to repeat it. Then again, who knew what would happen in a few years? But he knew one thing was sure, no other student would have been brazen enough to actually kiss him like Kat had, it was a unique quality she had that made her seem like she was much older than she was. Sometimes he got the distinct feeling that she’d been through a bit of stuff prior to this whole situation right now, not that he was about to ask her outright. They weren’t on confidante terms and he wasn’t about to misstep or something, overstep any boundary that could potentially do more harm than good in the long run. No, Derek was going to try and do this the right way.
But what was the right way? It’s all good really, no harm done, he told Kat with what he hoped was a friendly smile. There was no telling what his face looked like without a mirror, and there was none here right now, though there was that House of Mirrors deal for the carnival, not that it would help. Derek just felt like he was grimacing half the time now, so he hoped he had made an actual smile this time around. There was no saying what kind of other trouble he’d get himself into otherwise. He arched an eyebrow at what she said and wondered whether his company was so odious to her. Maybe she’d made a bigger mistake than he’d thought and he had actually just been at the wrong place at the wrong time, which meant she was now regretting this and didn’t want to see him. That could explain why she’d cancelled all their other tutoring sessions, though lord knew she needed some of those for math, he’d seen some of her results since the math teacher knew he was tutoring her. Not that he would impose on her, it was her own choice, and the choice of her employer in the long run. Still, he couldn’t help but feel slightly irked by her comment. That would’ve been a little bit hard to achieve anyway, given you’re in my languages class. Tutoring sessions aside, you would’ve come to the language one next week, I think. He didn’t think she’d skip it, but then again he couldn’t say he knew her all that well. He knew her well enough, but that didn’t mean anything. Then again, if she’d have skipped, then he would have had to write her a detention if he figured her out, which would possibly have complicated things even more. No, not possibly, obviously. There would have been obvious troubles on the horizon. Derek’s eyes landed on the stuffed toy again. You won that? He had a friendly expression on his face now. Even though he was a professor, that didn’t mean he couldn’t be nice to her, right? Right. He could be nice and keep his distance. That was all there was to it. Distance.

She was being ridiculous and she knew that, but the fact that she had actually allowed herself to kiss him that night was an indicator to how much her crush had grown in the past semester. It was normal to have a crush on your teacher, especially when he was good looking as most of the Vineheart professors seemed to be. But it was another thing to make it known, and she obviously had made it known. She was hoping that he thought that she had kissed him because she had been drunk and she was a huge flirt. After all it was a rather well known fact, and most guys relished in that because they loved flirting with a girl who would openly flirt back. She had once been told that this habit of hers had happened after what had happened with the first guy she had loved, but of course Kat just took it as the natural order of things. If she would have been destined to be that shy little school girl, that’s what she would have been. Plus it wasn’t like being innocent got you anywhere, if anything she could at least make smart decisions about who she dated. Not that she had made a very smart decision when she kissed her teacher, but that was something else altogether.
“Well I promise to watch where I’m going from now on” she said, even though he seemed perfectly fine with the fact she nearly ran into him.
It was a good thing that she hadn’t even realized it was him at first, or else she would have ended up babbling like a little school girl. Heck she wasn’t even acting like her normal self right now, given that she usually would have made some sort of smart remark right about now. Mostly about what a teacher was doing at the carnival, because it didn’t seem like their scene at all. Even though Kat was sure that she had seen at least a dozen of their teachers running around chaperoning. But where was the fun in that, because let’s be honest the whole point of a carnival was to actually enjoy oneself. Then again that might have just been her own opinion, and not everyone else shared it. Still she was finding it hard to look him in the eye, which would definitely be translated to the fact that she was a bit embarrassed over what she had done the other day. She looked up and nodded when he said that it would have been hard to avoid him forever because she did have classical languages with him. But still she had been counting on not seeing him until she got back from Bulgaria, which had been at least two weeks away. After all the carnival was sort of a have fun on vacation type of thing that the school had decided to hold. So she honestly wouldn’t have seen him until classes resumed after spring break. But she knew that she wouldn’t have skipped class, no matter how embarrassed over what she had done she wasn’t going to let her grade suffer in that manner. Even though she was pretty sure that she would be okay with skipping a class or two occasionally, but she didn’t like to do that unless it was an absolute emergency. At his question about her winning the puppy she looked down at it.
“Not really, the guy sort of felt sorry for me and he just let me have it after I knocked down one of the bottles” she said, “Aurelia said that he was probably trying to hit on me, but I thought he was just being nice”

He definitely wasn’t the only teacher present tonight, he could see some others in the distance right now, standing beside one of the candy booths and talking quietly while standing together, and Derek knew there were others walking around the carnival in general. Yes, they did allow their students to have fun, but at the same time, there was always the responsibility, especially since the kids were mostly royal. They couldn’t really have normal experiences in the same way, there was always going to be a chaperone or another hidden somewhere to make sure they didn’t do anything stupid to themselves, or that nothing happened to them. This was probably why someone had dragged Liam to go too, the other guy was big enough that anyone who thought to do anything for trouble was dissuaded enough just by looking in his direction, especially if he had worn the trademark jacket that made him look like an action hero from some movie or another. Derek shook his head at the thought, but he could understand the principal’s actions in this manner, and although he had seen the little girl that seemed to bounce up and about every time Norris was near, he was sure that the man didn’t allow himself too much relaxation with the world being as it was, and after the incidents that had already happend all around to some royals. The thought that something could happen tonight wasn’t actually too far-fetched, the setting was such that nobody would actually figure it out until later on of course.
He smiled faintly when she promised to wstch where she was going better from now on, and wondered whether she would have minded so much if she would have bumped into someone her own age. Probably not, and it was no common secret that Kat was a flirt – the teachers actually spoke more about their students than they would give them credit for, and most certainly they knew the latest gossip. It was something they could sometimes thrive on when they couldn’t really get themselves out of boredom, though Derek tended to remove himself as soon as some of the female teachers went into their gossiping mode. There were ups and downs to having staff members who weren’t that much older than the students themselves, and Derek wondered whether it would ever become actually a problem. He hoped not. He also hoped that he would never have to actually suffer through his class being skipped by people, so far he had actually been lucky, and some other teachers had already noticed it, but his attendance was pretty stellar, and he didn’t know whether that was because of the subject or because of other reasons he preferred not to think about. The thought made him shake his head mentally again and refocus his attention on Kat – and the puppy. That WAS nice of him, he commented as she explained about the stuffed toy, They’re not usually as open about giving stuff like that, at least they weren’t when I was your age. Not that he had attended Vineheart of course, but other schools also had carnivals in the area. Maybe it was just the fact that he was male instead of female though. That could also be it. But standing here right now was starting to eat at him, and he sighed. How about we walk back towards the actual carnival? I can’t imagine you find anything interesting in this little deserted corner. It would also give him some more time in her company, but he wasn’t about to say it out loud. He just wanted to make her feel more at ease right now.

Really she was going to have to reevaluate her situation when she went back home for break. She had actually been a bit worried by the flurry of doctor’s appointments that her father had been going to, but her parents had assured her that it was nothing to worry about. But she had been thinking in the past few days that she would take some time to come up with a decent excuse for what she had done that night, it was why she had been hoping to not run into him until she got back from vacation. Then she would have actually rehearsed whatever excuse she was going to sound completely believable and then that would be the end of it. She was pretty sure she could do it now, but she had no idea what she’d actually say. Hey sorry for kissing you, I was drunk. Well that didn’t seem like a good enough reason, though she was sure that’s what he was thinking. But he hadn’t brought it up, so she wasn’t sure if she should even bother to attempt to bring up the subject in the first place. And now that she realized what she was doing she began to scold herself mentally, she really just need to relax and just forget about everything. She was sure that the last thing he wanted to do was deal with a frazzled student.
She hoped that she wasn’t getting the guy at the booth in trouble by voicing what he had done. She hadn’t been that good at the game, okay she had been bad but wasn’t there such a thing as getting a prize for at least trying. Plus it wasn’t like he had given her one of those giant stuffed bears that she had seen for the people who knocked down the bottles on the first try. She would have loved to be able to get one of those, but she settled for the puppy because it was cute. But still she had a feeling that he wouldn’t be going to go tell on the booth guy, after all Kat was pretty certain that the whole point of this event was to allow the students to have fun. And well winning prizes and getting on the rides definitely seemed to fall under that particular category. She have a small shrug when he said that it had been nice of the guy at the booth. It wasn’t that big of a deal, at least not to her, but of course Aurelia loved to tease her about it because she said that she had turned up the charm. Which wasn’t what she had done at all, she was pretty sure that he had just felt sorry for her and that’s why she actually managed to walk away with the puppy. And of course the stuffed puppy was cute, she was pretty sure that if she ever had a real dog, she would want it to resemble the dog currently in her hands. She had a soft spot for tiny fluffy dogs, because they always just seemed so adorable and they always resembled a toy. Still she found herself realizing that she had to focus back on him and she mentally scolded herself again for allowing herself to space out.
“Oh I was actually just heading to my room, but I was kind of taking the long way” she said, “If you want to head into the carnival, feel free, I can find my own way back”

If anyone knew what was going through his mind right now, they’d probably think he was crazy, or even that he was dancing on the fine line of dangerous. If Norris ever got wind of what was in his thoughts, or even what had happened that other night, then he would be in big trouble, as would Kat. He was pretty sure that Mira would stand up for her servant though, just because he couldn’t see the princess as so cruel to let any of the people she trusted or felt close to be tossed from the school. That went against what he knew about the Bulgarian princess really. So he wasn’t too worried about Kat, she seemed to be a survivor type of girl anyway, he was, however, more worried about himself. He could get into a heck of a lot of trouble if anyone ever knew about this, or if either of the girls said a thing. Somehow, he had a feeling Kat would have probably talked about this to a best friend, and unless he was much mistaken, he could probably classify the German servant under that category. He wasn’t sure how to feel about that, or what to think, but that didn’t necessarily mean he would lose sleep over it. He needed to keep his wits around him right now, just in case any of his colleagues got any rumours and tried to poke anything more out of him. If anyone ever got to the point of actually teasing him about it – it would probably be Liam, while he thought about it, he was the only man for the job it seemed – he would very much need his cool. Honestly.
As for the guy who’d given her the stuffed animal? Derek really couldn’t care less, it was simply testimony to the fact that she could basically get anything she wanted from anyone. It was just as simple as that it seemed. He wasn’t about to argue with her powers though, he knew she could be charming enough when she wanted to be. After all, he was halfway under her spell already. Somehow, she just seemed like more mature than half the other kids here at Vineheart, and that was saying a lot coming from him, because he’d seen a bit even if he was still young for teaching standards. He stuffed his hands into his jeans pockets and eyed her as she looked down at the toy she held in her hands, and wondered whether it was always going to be this awkward between them from now on. If yes, then he really needed to do something about it before he went crazy. There was no way that he was losing his best student just because they couldn’t get over what happened. Of course she had to bring up the room excuse again, and Derek arched an eyebrow. I have an eery feeling we’ve talked about this before, he commented in a light manner as they turned to walk back in the carnival direction, even if circumstances’re different this time around. He didn’t want her to think that he was going to judge her though. That was the last thing he wanted to happen. Listen, about the other night ... He trailed off, not really knowing if she wanted to talk about this, or not. If she didn’t, then they had a problem. A bigger problem than the one they had right now, which was saying a whole lot. I don’t know if you want to talk about it or not – but I kind of think we should. And they had to do it prior to Spring break, or else things could get much more complicated without them even trying. It was just the way the world worked, and even if he was feeling uncomfortable ... well, he could deal with it.

She hadn’t even told Aurelia all of the details, the last thing she wanted was to get him in trouble. Not that she believed for a second that Aurelia would go and tell anyone, but she had a feeling that this secret was best kept just in her mind. After all he probably had more at risk than she did, even if she had initiated the kiss in the first place. But she was only a few months away from graduating, and there was no way that Mira would allow her to be expelled so close to graduation. After all it could be written off as a youthful indiscretion, but for him it could mean that he could lose his job and she would feel so guilty if that were to happen. So no, she knew that she had to just keep quiet and never tell anyone that this happened. She was pretty sure that it hadn’t meant anything anyway, he probably thought that she had done it because she had been super intoxicated and not for some other underlying reason. Hell that’s what she was telling herself most of the time, she had done it because she had been drunk and well she thought he was hot. Well okay she might have a crush on him, but she wasn’t about to admit that to anyone.
She pushed all the thoughts aside as she tried to find an easy escape route, the last thing she wanted to do was look stupid because she said she was heading to her room but there was no way to her room from here. There was a gap in between two of the tents, and that’s where she had been subconsciously heading. But there was a part of her brain that was telling her that she probably wasn’t going to get to walk away this time either. He would say that it wouldn’t kill her to walk through the carnival one more time, and it would probably be safer to do so that way. But still she wasn’t sure if she could get over the awkwardness that filled the air around her when she was standing there talking to him. She actually felt the heat rise to her face, which was something that never happened to her, at his words. She remembered what he had told her that night, and it had been similar because she had said exactly the same thing. Which of course was an indicative of what her intoxication level had been at the time, and how level headed she usually was despite having alcohol in her system. The only thing that really did affect her when she was drunk was her balance, and her shoes didn’t really help sometimes. He kept on speaking and when she heard the words the other night, her stomach did knots. She had been hoping to completely avoid this conversation, maybe never have to speak of it ever again. After all she didn’t need to hear him say what a big mistake it had been, and that she should never do it again because he was her teacher and it wasn’t appropriate. She could actually hear him saying all of those things too, and she was sure that actually hearing him say that would make it about a million times worse.
“I didn’t think we had much to say on the matter, I mean I was drunk” she said, “And the last thing I want is to make you go through the trouble of lecturing me on how wrong it was”

It was amazing what just one little action could do to you. Derek was pretty sure that he wouldn’t have even thought about the possibility of her having a crush on him or something until she kissed him, and now he was basically forced to acknowledge that and not really think about the possible consequences. If he did, then he was lost, the consequences were vast and probably far worse than even his darkest dreams could cojure, and not something that he wanted to consider more often than not. But then here he was, with the whole fact that apparently, Kat had either been super drunk that night, not that he’d put his head on the line for that, or she had a crush on him and the alcohol had simply helped her act prematurely on the whole matter. He would more likely bet on that one if he had to, but this was their lives that were on the line, or well, his mostly. Mira knew how to take care of her own and she probably wouldn’t let anything happen to her servant, she had power enough as it seemed. But him? He didn’t have that kind of power, which meant that he had to be extra careful right now, especially since he was yet again more or less alone with her. True, it was a carnival and people were everywhere, but no one was actually walking with them, something that would not go unnoticed if he had any experience with these matters. Hopefully though, things wouldn’t just collapse catastrophically.
And of course, he had to talk to her about the other night. There was no feasible way for him to stay quiet about it and just continue like nothing had happened. He would feel much better if the two of them could simply address the matter at hand and not beat around the bush. That would most definitely help him in the long run, but he wasn’t sure whether she felt the same way or not. Probably not. He couldn’t imagine she’d want to talk about the possible embarrassing scenario for her, since he wasn’t sure what she felt about the whole subject in general. He was going to have to be persistent though and simply push through, because there was no way he was just letting it drop and be like that. It was dangerous enough left on its own, but he didn’t need it all to explode into their face, mainly his, when things got out of hand with the gossip blog. If they did, which he was hoping beyond hope they wouldn’t, but then again, his hopes and reality didn’t really mesh well most of the time. So he sighed and turned to walk with her again, but still intent on talking this through. Especially when he saw that she was blushing, because that was a bad sign as any, and he didn’t take lightly to that. He sighed again when she spoke, and shook his head, Maybe, but there’re two different ways to look at it. You’re taking the easy one, which makes me believe, from what I know about you from teaching you otherwise, that it’s not the actual one. His hands were still in the pockets of his jeans. In an alternative universe, they could have enjoyed the carnival together – but not here. And you know what I was going to say anyway, so no use in me saying it – but still. He aligned his jade green eyes down to her. Are you sure there’s nothing else I should know about, aside from the fact you were supposedly too drunk to really know what you were doing? And he didn’t believe that. She didn’t strike him as the type.

Why couldn’t the earth just eat her up right now? That would actually be preferable because she understood where he was going. He was going to want to talk about what had happened, and well she wasn’t mentally prepared. She could probably come up with some sort of hasty excuse, being drunk was definitely a good one. It wasn’t like he had ever been around her when she was drunk, so he wouldn’t know how she got. See Kat really was never an irrational drunk, she said stupid things sometimes, did stupid things but it was a rare occurrence. But he obviously wouldn’t know anything about the things she did when she was drunk, unless he asked around. But she seriously doubted that he would. Still she couldn’t think of anything else she could say to him that would make sense. But she tried to push out all of the panic because if he realized that she was panicking he might somehow understand. It was somewhat paranoid of her to think that he’d pick up on that so easily, but you honestly never know. Why on earth did she have to have a crush on her teacher? Why couldn’t she have a crush on one of the dozens of available boys around? She knew there was an answer to that, and she was afraid of the response. Because the more she thought about it, the more she realized that she had reasons to like him. He was attractive, that much was obvious, but there were other things in the equation as well. Things she didn’t normally deal with, after all it wasn’t like she could actually admit to liking him, and then they’d skip into the sunset. That was not how things tended to function in the real world, and she was actually okay with that. After all she had stopped believing in happily ever after’s a long time ago, and she was completely okay with that. She knew that at some point in her life she’d probably fall in love again, get married, the whole nine yards, but it wasn’t like she fully expected some guy to sweep her off her feet in the immediate months. So why even go there with her mind. And why were they even talking about this? It would only make things more awkward for her, and she’d feel like she was being cornered. And it wasn’t like it was the best topic to be discussion in a somewhat crowded carnival where anyone could overhear them. Even though there would be logic in saying that it would be harder to be overheard with so many people around. They were still walking and luckily no one thought it was odd that she was walking with him. They were all still too preoccupied playing games, laughing and enjoying the carnival. She knew that she was taking the easy way out, but that was the only way she wouldn’t end up completely humiliated over what had happened the other day. Especially because she could basically hear him telling her that it had been completely wrong, and it wasn’t something she was supposed to be doing. Still at his question, with his eyes looking down at her she was finding it hard to come up with a really good lie. She just wanted to nod and say there had been nothing more than the fact she had too much to drink, probably too many martinis, and she had been drunk. She hadn’t been in full control of her actions and to just leave it at that. Then she could go back home, pretend it never happened and maybe have some sort of normalcy return to her life after spring break.
“I guess the better question here would be, why do you think I did it?” she said, “Because what I’m getting from the oh so obvious subtext of your question is that you don’t think I did it just because I was drunk”

Of course things could get out of hand pretty fast here. Especially since they were at a carnival, but all the same, Derek didn’t feel like sitting behind his desk all night, or even hiding in his office until he thought the coast was clear. He was a quiet one, yes, but he had never actually been a submissive one. He wasn’t one to cower when he thought he could do better by actually putting some action in somewhere. He didn’t know where or how, but it did seem better to him than just bowing his head and pretending nothing had happened, which seemed to be exactly what Kat wanted to do, thoughhe could obviously understand why. A lot was at stake, and he wasn’t going to be stupid enough to risk something bad happening to either of them, but that didn’t mean that he didn’t want answers. Actually, it only meant that he wanted answers more than before, because if something was so forbidden, then it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. And he couldn’t really come to any conclusions with his own mind and analyse what had gone down that night when he’d caught her in the hallway without really knowing what was going through HER mind in return. Derek could analyse and overanalyse, but he did want to know whether she was feeling the same way, what she was actually feeling at all, and he tried not to think of any possible explanations that might end up in disaster for the both of them, not that it was really helping him along the way. The more he thought about it, the worse images crossed through his mind, and he did NOT need something like that right now. Or ever.
She wasn’t really responding the way he would have liked though, which to him was saying a lot. Either she was mortified by what she’d done, or she was simply embarrassed by the fact that he was on to her. Or both. He didn’t know which option to choose and she certainly wasn’t really helping him with them either. Kat was an enigma to him right now, where Mira was pretty straightforward her servant could definitely make his head spin just by trying to figure her out without leaving any collateral damage in the wake. She wasn’t making it any easier for him of course, though granted, he wasn’t being the best at the job either, and he knew he had to up his game a little bit if he wanted any straight answers from her. At the carnival, a lot of people could see them, but then not many would take notice since they all seemed to be too busy with themselves, which said that they were basically as safe here as any place else, if not more. It was definitely safer to be in a crowd than standing on their own somewhere where they could definitely be noticed. She returned to her normal self though when she quipped him right back, and Derek did have to admit to himself that he’d been aiming just at that. An idea had sort of been dawning on him lately, the more he thought about it, not that he actually liked it. No, actually, he didn’t think kindly about it at all, simply because it was so DANGEROUS at the end of the day. He pushed his hands deeper into his jeans pockets, watching one of the first years run away, screaming, from her classmates who tried dousing her in what looked like a mix of water and cream. He could also see one other staff member move to help her, so he could stay where he was. You saying that only proves to me that there’s more to this than just being drunk, he finally said, looking back to Kat from the scene he’d previously witnessed. There was no easy way to say this, and he was going to sound conceited, but he had to do it anyway. He was the teacher, after all. Don’t take this the wrong way on my account – but I think you kissed me because you wanted to, not because you were drunk.

She definitely did not want to have this conversation right now. This had not been in her plans for the night at all, she had been hoping to just get to her room, do some last minute packing and leave it at that. She was going back home the next day, and she had promised herself she wouldn’t even think about the topic while she was home. Especially with how odd her parents had been acting over the phone lately. She had been hoping to just gain some sense of normalcy in her visit home. But apparently fate had other thoughts for her because she had the luck to not only run into him, but to also have him want to talk about what had happened the other night. So much for just brushing it off as a drunken mistake and calling it a night. Wasn’t it a valid excuse? It certainly seemed that way, and the only thing that this whole conversation was doing was putting her on edge, and that was the last thing she wanted. If anyone got even the smallest of whiffs as to what had happened, there would be serious consequences. She knew it had been stupid, but the alcohol had only managed to lower her inhibitions that night and of course it wasn’t like she was the most innocent girl in the bunch. That had stopped being the case a long time ago, and a kiss honestly wasn’t that bad, she had done much worse. Obviously not with a professor, and obviously not with just a random guy, but still she was not innocent by any means.
Still she waited on a response from him, she needed to get some sort of inclination as to what he thought on the subject. Obviously she knew he thought it was a mistake, that much had been obvious after the kiss. But still she was a bit curious as to why he thought she did it, a part of her had hoped that he would have just thought that it was her being stupid and things would end there. But him asking, obviously meant that he didn’t think it had just been an impulse on her behalf. That would be a good excuse, would it not? That she had just done it on impulse, after all no one would deny that he was attractive, and no one would deny that she was a huge flirt. But no, she was pretty sure going down that path wouldn’t work as her obviously pretending it had been an act of intoxication hadn’t worked. Still she waited for him to reply, and sure enough her earlier thoughts had been proved correct, he knew that she hadn’t done it because she was drunk. But what was she supposed to say? Oh I kissed you because I like you, talk about embarrassing. But she was just growing a bit irritated with the whole topic, she just wanted to leave and completely forget that it happened. Still luckily no one was playing particular attention to them, so she hoped that no one would overhear what they were talking about because that would be a problem onto itself. But no, everyone seemed to be so distracted by their surroundings that a teacher and a student talking held no interest to them. She bit down on her lip, okay so since she couldn’t use her drunk excuse, what else could she say?
““Okay so what do you want me to say? Because you are obviously fishing for a particular answer” she said, ““Do you want me to admit to liking you? Fine. I do. But it’s not like I don’t already know what you are going to say in response to that. So what’s the point of my admitting it to you? It won’t help matters in the least.”
