He really, really, REALLY wished he didn’t have to do this right now, but honestly, there was no way out of it that he could see. They needed to talk about this before things got wildly out of hand further on, and they needed to be on the same page about it. Of course, if anyone would ask, Derek would go to his grave swearing that Kat had simply been drunk, too drunk to really know what she was doing, and he was pretty sure she’d be saying the same thing. The only problem was, could they lie so convincingly when the truth was so painfully obvious? Derek had a hunch that they wouldn’t be able to hide it for long. She obviously hadn’t done it just because she’d been drunk, he knew her well enough by now to know what when she wanted to do something, she did it regardless of the consequences or what was happening around her. She’d been his student in Classical languages for a long time now and he knew what she wanted most of the times. Not that this occasion was any better though, because he couldn’t really say that he knew her wishes. He did know that they were probably more than just dangerous though; they could bring about disastrous consequences, especially because he hadn’t exactly been the most innocent person of the two of them that night. He had kissed her back, too. Maybe for half a second, but he had, and it was enough to condemn him if she were to point that fact out, which he was hoping she wasn’t about to. He didn’t find her that cruel or malicious, but then you never knew. What was the saying again? Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. He was walking on thin ice here, and needed to watch his every step.
It was obvious that he was pushing her out of her comfort zone just by the way she kept on biting her lower lip and glancing down at the stuffed toy she’d won at one of the stands, but Derek needed the truth out in the open before he could make any sort of closure. One of his old mentors at university had said once that he was about as relentless as a hound dog when he wanted to be, especially when he could practically see the finish line and needed only to get back to it. Right now, he could so obviously see that it was going to be one of those conversations that replayed itself forever in your brain, but he needed to think about it otherwise it would all turn ever worse eventually. He didn’t want to consider how much worse. That would just be ... well, not amusing, to say the least. Although Kat was definitely being amusing with how irked she was with the subject, yet another proof that he was right in his assumptions, which meant that they were in big trouble. But the carnival was in full spring around them and so no one was really paying them any attention. They needed to talk about this, but maybe the place was slightly off. Especially when she finally admitted the truth, the actual truth, something he could clearly detect in her words. Derek reached out to gently guide Kat back into walking, just to remain out of conspicuous glances, and didn’t really respond until they were behind one of the bigger stalls, on the path that led back towards the school. The point is that I want you to be aware o why you did it and not turn it into a lie to placate yourself with, he replied in a soft voice, his hand dropping again, though it was itching for a better hold. This was very, very dangerous. And I’m glad you chose to be honest with me, Kat. He could give her that much, though the revelation didn’t really bring him much joy. There was no way something like this could make you happy. The most alarming factor was that he wasn’t exactly impartial towards her either, which made things worse. We’ll talk more about this once you’re back from Spring break, he finally said. They both needed the time, now that it was out in the open. He, in particular, needed to scramble his scattered thoughts together. I’ll expect you in our tutoring sessions after you get back – we both need to think about what happened, though. Because if we don’t, things could get wildly out of hand. And he had no idea how wildly out o hand they could get, which was the scariest factor of all.
