We need to talk. What did that mean? Kata had never had a boyfriend before, so she didn't know. Was it bad? Was it good? She and Nick had only met a month ago, and though things had kind of been moving fast between them, she knew she felt strongly for him. He was sweet, protective, and caring -- so much like the boys she'd read about in fairytales and watched in movies Julianna forced her to watch. So what was going wrong? She pondered this as she roamed through the hallway during her off hour on Wednesday. Most students were in class, save for a few fifth years, but the hallways were still totally and completely empty. Kata was supposed to be using this off time for servant duties, but she was so distracted that she just couldn't think right. She knew Julianna wouldn't mind if she returned to a messy room; the Hungarian princess hardly wanted her to do anything for her anyways, even though Kata always insisted. She was just so grateful; she would never stop owing the Hungarian royals her life. As far as figuring out her past went, things had come to a halt. Julia had her completely on something else -- though Kata didn't know what -- and they had next to no information except that the Veres company was still around, though in secret. But why would her father be running the company in secret? To remain in hiding from those people that had stormed the mansion?
She sighed, one hand running through her long, golden blonde curls. Kata honestly didn't know where she was going, so she took a quick look around. She seemed to have veered off of the main first floor hallway into one of the northern sectors of the school that led to the back, where the currently frozen pond was. She needed to find something to get her mind off of what Nick had said; he was in class and would be for the next two hours, so of course she wouldn't be able to reach him. Kata chewed on her lip as she rounded the corner, her eyes glued on the floor and her mind elsewhere.
Smack! She rammed head first into another body, and with a surprised cry fell back against the floor. After a moment, Kata stood up, her golden blonde curls in her face as she reached to steady the person she'd rammed into. "I'm so sorry," she apologized, wiping the hair out of her face as she looked up at the unknown person. "I should have looked where I --" Immediately, she cut off. It was almost like the oxygen had just disappeared from her lungs, like turning off a light. Her hazel eyes widened and for a moment, she was completely silent, like a deer caught in the headlights.
For there, standing right in front of her, was a face she'd thought she'd never see again. Shiny blonde waves, tall, confident posture, nice ladylike curves. She almost didn't recognize her were it not for the mysterious grey-blue eyes, the very exact color of the eyes of the little boy that had haunted her dreams. "Lia?" She finally spluttered out, her sweet Hungarian voice small and childlike. No, it couldn't be. How could it be? She must be dreaming, because this wasn't real. Her twin sister had been shipped off as a sex slave, just like Kata was going to be before one of the guards rescued her.

The library was usually one of the best places to go when in need of a quiet place. The silence in the large room was relaxing and made it a lot easier to do homework. Aurelia perched comfortably in one of the cushioned chairs as she finished up what was left of her paper. She still didn’t understand why she needed to write such a lengthy response for a class that meant practically nothing to her. As she stared at the paper she sighed. Her mind wandered off to a time in the past where writing papers were not necessary. Out in the streets school was constant and never ending, but instead of writing papers and sitting in classrooms, there were the essential tasks of finding food and staying alive. During the winter wasn’t exactly the easiest time to do that especially when the animals she was forced to hunt for were scarce. It wasn’t very often that such rare game would make an appearance in the snow, so she was forced to resort to pick pocketing. The first few attempts when she first learned almost landed her in prison, but she was lucky to be fast enough to get away. As time went on and there was plenty of time for practice, Aurelia soon became very good at getting exactly what she needed. At the sound of a chair being pushed back she returned to the present and finished her response with a simple conclusion. The hallways were practically empty when Aura left the library. On her way out she had picked up a book to keep herself busy whenever she wasn’t need by Grayson. The book however, would most likely never be used because even when Grayson didn’t need her, Aura was normally found catching the attention of random guys around Vineheart. Her relationships didn’t last long, but that was the norm for her. She was always bouncing around from one guy to the next. The aimless walking finally led Aurelia to the hallway near the frozen pond. She stopped and stared out the window for a moment taking in the scene. Somebody was out there on the ice and all she could do was snort. What kind of person went out onto a body of water covered in a thin layer of ice knowing that it was freezing outside and the chances of breaking the ice and falling in were very high? Well, that was one idiot she was not inclined to save, so Aura turned sharply and began walking again. One moment she was glancing out the windows and the next she found her books thrown about the floor and a girl in front of her.
With a sigh of disgust Aurelia bent to pick up her things and set her gaze on the stranger. She didn’t hear the offered apology and got pissed. Watch where you’re going would yo…you can’t be. This is not happening. This had to be another one of her hallucinations. Kata had been missing for the longest time and now her mind was just playing with her again. The girl before her looked just like her twin and as she gazed into her eyes she saw the hazel shade that had been gone from her life. It was her, it had to be. Aurelia nodded in confirmation as Kata called her name. The books that had previously been in her arms fell to the floor again and tears began to well up in her eyes as she stared, Kata? Oh my god, I can’t believe I found you! She reached out for a hug wanting to feel her sister in her arms. It was a necessity, Aura had been waiting for this for as long as she could remember.

The voice that immediately greeted her was harsh but laden thick with the familiar Hungarian accent, hardened but lyrical, characteristic of her hometown. The clear irritation surprised Kata, but then the voice changed, and it was softer, recognizable, a voice that only belonged to one person in this world. She had never known what being breathless felt like, what it felt like to have seemingly no air in your lungs. But the suffocation she was feeling made her head spin, and Kata, for a moment, stumbled backward against the crook of the wall, holding onto the corner for support so that she would not faint from shock. The sound of the books crashing to the floor was like background noise to the buzzing in her head as she focused in on the familiar face, on the grey eyes and the soft, rounded face. Only her sister's name had left her lips in the small voice characteristic of the sweet Hungarian girl, and for a moment Kata truly believed it to be a dream or a vision. Perhaps she'd been knocked unconscience and this was what she was seeing? No, this was real, very real, because suddenly she was pulled into her sister's arms, and it was the sound of her name that resonated through her. Her sister was very much alive; she could feel the warmth from her body against her skin, the tug of slim but strong arms pulling her close. Were those tears she felt against her neck? Was her sister crying? No...it appeared it was Kata who was shedding silent tears, still no sound escaping her as she let her hands clutch the fabric of her sister's shirt.
How could this be? It didn't make sense. Kata pulled away from her sister, from Aurelia, her head shaking from side to side, her hazel eyes still spilling tears down her cheeks. "I don't understand," she mumbled out, reaching out to touch her sister's face. She was real. The skin was soft beneath her fingers. "How are you here?" She asked, confusion running through her. This didn't make any sense! Lia was supposed to be shipped off as a sex slave somewhere in this world -- she'd obviously escaped...but how? I finally found you. Aurelia had said that, just moments before. What did that mean? Did that mean she'd been looking for her? How long had she been searching, where had she looked? Kata had narrowly escaped her own fate thanks to a sympathetic guard; when she'd been stuffed into the box carrying the girls away, her sister had not been with her. Had she escaped before then?
Suddenly, previous words ran through her mind. We need to talk. Those had been Nick's words to her just last night, when he'd sent her that text message. We need to talk. They'd needed to talk about something. Something important. Something...involving Aurelia? Her eyes widened and she buried her face in her hands, the confusion of it all overwhelming her. Nick...the boy who ran through the fields with her when they were young, who played games with them all day long...Dominick, the servant boy who saved Kata and her sister before they'd been caught by the guards. Kata could finally put the pieces together. Nick...Dominick. The messy brown hair, sweet blue eyes; she knew she'd seen that face somewhere. He'd been lying, then, this entire time? He'd known her sister was alive this entire time? I've finally found you. Her sister had been looking for her, and yet, judging by Aurelia's reaction, she had not known Kata was here. Had Dominick lied to the both of them? Or was this all an odd chance of fate?

At that moment Aurelia wasn’t really sure what to believe. Her night terrors and hallucinations always brought Kata back and standing right in front of her, but as soon as she was hugging the girl Aura knew that this was no hallucination. A tear slipped down her cheek when she realized that after years of searching she had finally found her sister. She didn’t know whether she wanted to collapse or jump up and down. What amazed her most was that she actually had a tear rolling down her cheek. Aurelia thought that she had cried her eyes dry after that night back in Hungary. No matter how hard she tried the girl couldn’t produce a single tear until now when the one person she was beginning to think was dead was right here in her arms. Now Aurelia was glad that she hadn’t given up on her sister and she couldn’t figure out how the hell she managed to escape the crates with the other girls. Aura wiped the tear from her face and released her sister from her arms. She shrugged lightly at her sister’s question. I’m a servant for the German royal family. Grayson is my charge. After Dom and I escaped Hungary we applied for the job over in Germany. The queen was so nice and she took us in right away. The girl explained trying to make her explanation sound a lot simpler than it really was. With a deep breath Aurelia closed her eyes for a moment trying to regain control of her emotions. How did you escape? I thought for sure that Elias’ men had you. It was terrible. Her gaze fell to the books that were again scattered across the floor and leaned down to pick them up. Aura couldn’t leave things lying on the floor anymore; it was a habit she had picked up while working for Grayson.
Now Aurelia began to wonder where Dominick was and if he knew that Kata was here. If he was and held out on her she’d be very upset. After basically living with him her whole life and taking care of each other why would he not say anything? It wasn’t like he couldn’t trust her, was it? As her gaze fell upon her twin, Aura wondered what exactly she was doing at Vineheart. So what exactly brings you here? She asked with a slight tilt of her head though she knew that Kata had to be a servant as well. Unless she was adopted by a royal family which she wasn’t going to lie, that would be pretty awesome. Then again Aura couldn’t picture anything like that happening even with some of the royals being extremely kind out there. Her day was turning out to get better as it went on. When she woke up that morning Aurelia was having a bad day and luckily she didn’t have to worry about too many classes, so she headed off to the library hoping that some quiet would change things. It turned out that the quiet didn’t really help this time, but running into her long lost twin definitely did. Now she wondered what would happen next. Maybe she’d find an attractive guy in her room. She inwardly rolled her eyes at that one. Have you hear from Dom at all? I know he’s here at Vineheart because he’s in charge of Grayson’s younger sister. Why hadn’t she seen him? Very rarely did she get the chance to meet up with him and even though their charges were a few years apart in age, it didn’t mean that he couldn’t stop by and see her between classes or something. Was he avoiding her?

Kata listened to the story unfold and her eyes widened in shock. How had they been able to escape Hungary and make it to Germany? Dominick had only arrived at Vineheart a month ago...which meant they hadn't been with the German royal family for very long. So where had they lived? What had they done the past six years? Where had she gone? And how had they escaped in the first place? Kata could barely register and digest everything when Aurelia had asked that very same question, and Kata pushed her hair back from her face. "I almost didn't get away," Kata said, closing her eyes, trying to get the image of that night out of her mind. It was useless -- the memories would forever be burned into her thoughts. "I was in the cart that was hauling away all of the girls, and one of the guards recognized me and helped me escape when we stopped for the night," she explained. "Some guy he knew took me away and the next thing I knew, I was at the palace in Budapest. Her Majesty agreed to take me in as a servant, though I get the feeling she knows who I really am." Driving up to the steps of the palace would forever be a symbol of hope for Kata -- the feeling of relief she'd felt when the strange man had brought her to the palace guards was something she would always remember. How does one forget the image of their final hope? They don't.
Kata grabbed Aurelia's hand -- an image of the two of them as children immediately flashed through her mind -- and pulled her over to the other side of the hallway, where there were window ledges available for seating. She sat down and gave Aurelia a serious look, her expression concerned. "How did you stay alive all of these years? The Hungarian royals have been so kind to me, caring for me...but where were you and Dominick? How did you get away from Elias?" She asked. There were so many answers she needed to know. She needed to know that Aurelia had not greatly suffered all of these years, only barely surviving. It would kill her otherwise, living a rather luxurious life in the palace while Aurelia struggled to make it through the day. This all still seemed so unreal, and Kata had to force back the tears threatening to fall again, just so that she could focus on putting the pieces of the story together. If Aurelia was alive, that meant maybe the rest of their family was okay too, right? The Veres company was still allegedly around, although Elias was technically in charge...their family could just be hiding out, just like Aurelia was, right? Hiding from Elias until the time came to take everything back. "What about the others, Lia? Have you heard from Mama and Papa?" She asked tentatively, suddenly afraid of the answer. What if hoping for the best all of these years wasn't what she should have been doing?
She was silent for a moment, her eyes staring down at her wringing hands. Had she seen Dom...well, up until five minutes ago, finding Dominick had seemed like a dream to pursue after she'd graduated Vineheart and could go out and look for her family on her own. But now, it was obvious: Nick had lied the entire time, had hid from her his true identity. The years had changed the sweet innocent boy she once knew in her childhood days, into a strong, nice young man...one who was barely recognizable to his former self. "He lied to me, Lia," Kata said quietly, taking a deep breath. "He told me his name was Nick, just a German servant. He didn't tell me he was Dominick, and he most certainly didn't say anything about you still being alive," she said, the hurt clear in her voice. This changed absolutely everything. "But he told me we needed to talk. I'm guessing he was going to tell me the truth because you were coming here."

Aurelia was still trying to recover from the shock of seeing her sister alive and well. She was safe and doing well all of this time and not once had Dominick mentioned anything to her. They were going to have a long talk whenever she found him; there was no doubt about that. Why was he trying to hide her from Kata and vice versa? As she listened to her sister she felt her stomach twist when Kata said she almost didn’t get away. The thought of her sister being a sex slave made her sick especially when she had gotten away pretty much unscathed. Aurelia couldn’t believe that one of the guards had saved her. She wondered which one it was that he would recognize the girl and save her even though he would have most likely been punished if word got out. Oh my God. I can’t believe you got so lucky. I thought for sure that they had taken you for good. It was probably one of the worst moments in her life, well other than seeing the rest of her family’s bodies being carted out of the house. When Kata mentioned the Queen of Hungary she smirked and shook her head lightly. That’s really something, I’m glad you got in somewhere immediately. It was very kind of the Queen to do that. Aurelia loved her sister to death, but she honestly couldn’t see her lasting too long out on the streets. And she most certainly didn’t want to think about how it would’ve changed her like it had changed Lia. She shook the thought from her head and glanced up at her sister taking her in and never wanting her to leave her sight again.
When Kata took her hand Aurelia looked down as their hands linked together and she remembered how they used to walk around hand in hand as kids. She followed her twin to the opposite side of the hallway and set her books on the floor beneath the ledge that Kata had perched on. Once everything was in order Aurelia took a seat next to her sister and frowned at the question she was being asked. Honestly I don’t think you really want to know what I’ve had to do. But…Dominick and I, we lived on the streets all of these years. When we were separated Dom came and got me early that morning, he told me that you had already been taken. So we hid in one of the servant’s quarters in the house until it seemed like everybody was gone and made a run for it once it was safe. Aurelia didn’t really want to tell Kata that she lived in the streets, but it only seemed fair to be honest with her sister. It was definitely not going to be what would’ve been nice to hear, but at least it was the truth. She leaned against the wall and shut her eyes for a moment trying to get rid of the flashbacks that bombarded her mind. Living on the streets wasn’t exactly the greatest moments in her life, but they did have one positive effect on her. They made her grow up and realize that life wasn’t all just ponies and rainbows. Which was why she was so devoted to her job and the people she found herself closest with. Aurelia bit the inside of her cheek to keep from frowning when Kata asked about the rest of the family. This was going to be terrible for the girl. At least in Lia’s case she’d had closure when she saw the bodies, but Kata didn’t have that opportunity and it was probably going to be very difficult for her. Kata, I don’t know how to tell you this any other way, so I’m just going to tell you straight out. They’re dead. Dom and I watched as their bodies were carried out of the house. It was the absolute worst thing I’ve ever had to experience in my life. Telling it that way now seemed a little harsh after she thought about what she had said for a moment, but she honestly couldn’t think of a better way to tell her.
This time Aurelia didn’t fight the frown that formed on her lips as Kata said that Dom had lied to her too. What the hell was that boy thinking? The only thing he was succeeding in doing at the moment was pissing her off even more than before. Oh he’s going to get it! He never told me about you either and ohhhh! She was beyond angry and once she found him, Aurelia was going to wring his neck. After all they had been through together and he was just going to lie to her about her sister? This was ridiculous. What the hell was he thinking hiding this from us? Why would he want to keep us separated? I don’t understand. Aurelia drummed her fingers on one of her legs as she glanced out the window. Dominick was certainly going to get an ear full when she next saw him.

Learning that Aurelia had had it bad on the streets of Hungary crushed Kata. All of this time, they had probably only been miles apart, not knowing that the other was still alive and still in Hungary. But how could her sister and Dominick have hidden in the house until they could make their escape? Kata had been certain the house was not still there. She'd read the papers that said the Veres estate had been burned to the ground and no trace of the house or family remained. Kata had thought that meant her family had escaped and then Elias had set the house on fire to make it seem like the whole family had died in a misfortunate fire. Elias had not been in the will, as far as Kata remembered...but perhaps, to gain all of the money and inheritance of the Veres company, he had forced her father to rewrite the will, perhaps in exchange for sparing his life and living a life of exile. That seemed the best explanation for all of this mess concerning Kata's identity. Six years she'd been under the name "Kata Kevegny" as per the Queen's request, but she had never understood why. Now, she understood -- the Queen was saving her, keeping her identity hidden and keeping her away from the hands of Elias. So, then, the Queen of Hungary knew? And she had not done anything about Elias' betrayal? Perhaps the Veres Company was far more powerful than Kata realized.
Her eyes were transfixed on her sister, judging her every reaction, and as soon as Lia's face fell, Kata knew something wasn't right. Her heart immediately picked up speed, a feeling of dread overcoming her. They're dead, her sister said with a straight face. Dead. The air around Kata thickened, leaving her feeling like her chest was constricted, finding it hard to breathe. The image of little Henrik, with his curly blonde hair and grey-blue eyes -- the same color of eyes as the girl sitting next to her -- flashed through her mind, the sound of his sweet giggles filling her ears. Kata buried her face in her hands, wishing the images of her family to go away, but they were there. They were always there, but she would never again see them. Never again run away from Simon as he threatened to tickle her; never again see her mother smile down at her; never again crawl into her father's arms on days when he was relaxing out on the porch of the mansion. Her family was gone forever. And poor, poor Henrik...her baby brother, only five years old, gone from the world before her could experience it. All because of one man's greed, one man who was supposed to be family. Silent tears fell down her cheeks as she kept her face in her hands, her eyes squeezed shut, wishing her life wasn't so screwed up like this. Lia had said it so simply, but then again, she'd known for years now...Kata had spent so long hoping it she would find her family again. At least she still had Aurelia. Lia meant more to her now more than ever before.
So the house had been burned, and they hadn't found the bodies...because Elias had them taken away. He probably threw them in a ditch somewhere, just to defile their resting place. Their bodies were somewhere, hidden, not given a proper burial. This realization sent a new feeling through her, a feeling Kata had never felt before of this intensity: anger. Hatred. Revenge. Kata was not a negative person, but this knowledge made her blindingly angry. She took a deep breath to compose herself, knowing that negativity would not help in this situation, and then lifted her head to look at Lia. Her sister was rattling off anger against Dominick, but Kata was not the least bit worried about their childhood friend. It didn't make sense for him to lie, but there must have been a good enough reason; the Nick -- no, Dominick -- she knew wouldn't be so heartless as to keep two sisters apart. Besides, wouldn't she have seen Aurelia around Vineheart at some point? Vineheart was a large school but not very populated. You couldn't hide forever. Her sister must have just arrived, whether a few days ago or a week ago...and perhaps, Dominick had just been trying to figure out how to tell Kata. "I don't know, Lia," she finally said with a sigh. "Maybe he was just scared about telling me and you the truth. I'm sure he recognized me when he first saw me...maybe he didn't think I'd remember," Kata suggested. "Six years is a long time to remember a boy from your childhood. But still...we'll just have to ask him." Not only that, but now she had quite a bit to share with Julianna...new, solid information meant easier access to finding out what was going on with the Veres Company.

Aurelia frowned as she watched the tears slip down her sister’s cheeks. Gently, she wiped them away and brought her arms around her twin in a strong embrace. Sure she had time to get over her family’s death, but it still haunted her and she was also pretty good at keeping her emotions in check. That came from years of practice and was something that she needed to pick up while living on the streets of Hungary. Aurelia wished she didn’t have to bear the bad news, but it only seemed right that her sister knew the truth. She still felt a little bad for being so blunt about what had happened, but it was the only way she knew how to do anything these days. Being detailed and getting straight to the point was something Aurelia felt needed to be practiced more often by the world, though she wasn’t about to go into detail about what she had seen to her twin. No way would she paint that picture into Kata’s head, it was bad enough that she had to hear about the news years later. I’m sorry that you had to hear it like this. I just didn’t know how else to tell you and I’m actually quite surprised that you didn’t already know. Aurelia wondered if the queen had known anything about the Veres family after everything had happened. Did she know that basically their whole family was gone? If she did, why hadn’t she told Kata about it instead of leaving the poor girl to wonder and hope that things would all turn out right again?
A soft sigh escaped her lips as she soothed her sister. Why did things have to be so complicated? Aurelia bit her bottom lip when Kata suggested that Dominick was scared to tell them the truth. For some reason she knew that that couldn’t have been what it was, but even if it were true why would he be afraid to tell her? She and Dominick had lived together for so long on the streets it wasn’t like there was a reason for him to not trust her. Hell they would spend the nights in each others’ arms to keep warm, if that wasn’t a good enough reason to trust her then what would be? The girl was still skeptical about this whole situation, though she decided to just leave it at Kata’s suggestions for now. Aurelia had decided that she was going to have to interrogate the boy when she found him, though she knew that it’d be a little difficult since he’d been so elusive lately. Alright, sure. The trick is going to be trying to find him though. I’ve been looking for him for quite some time now and have still yet to find him. She replied with a sigh and glanced out the window. Aurelia felt a little awkward at the moment and she wasn’t sure why. The girl felt like she was talking to Kata for the first time and didn’t know anything about her. This of course shouldn’t have been a surprise because she knew that if she were to ever find her sister, they would pretty much know nothing about each other, other than their pasts. Why does life have to be so complicated? It makes me wonder what kind of person I was in another life to earn this one.
Aurelia momentarily studied her reflection in the window before bringing her gaze back to her sister. God did she feel terrible and by the looks of her reflection, she looked that way too. A soft smile grew on her lips as she looked at Kata. They were going to have to basically start over and get to know each other again. It would be a long road, but it shouldn’t be too hard especially since they already knew each other pretty well, or so Aurelia hoped. So tell me about yourself. You said you work for Julianna, how’s that going for you? The princess seemed to be a decent girl though Aurelia wasn’t really too sure how she felt about her. She knew for sure that the princess was certainly quite popular. As for everything else though she really didn’t know because Aurelia was more worried about getting Grayson whatever he needed and then when she wasn’t with Grayson she was either with one of her playthings or Kat. Ever since she arrived at Vineheart she’d pretty much thrown herself into relationships looking for something that she could never really grasp. Most of her ‘relationships’ turned out to be flings or one night stands, but there was one person that she had managed to keep a pretty decent connection with. Christian Ames. They were the on-again, off-again kind of couple though she was mostly to blame for that. There was just something that wasn’t letting her commit herself to Christian and she felt kind of bad for the guy, but what could she do? Do you have a boyfriend? How about a best friend? Aurelia decided that she wanted to get as much information on her sister as possible, so that way when they went their separate ways she would have something to think over.
