-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- This night out was going to be quite an interesting event for Jasmin. It was one of the first times she had been out on a week night without Nikola in tow, as well as her first night out with someone in an aspect of an err umm “friendly” manner. Add to it was the fact that the company she was going to be in tonight was a fellow staff member at Vineheart and there might just be a recipe for disaster. To be honest, she did not know Liam Sullivan all that well – like her, he had not been at the school but this school year. He already knew about Nikola, not that Jas necessarily kept her a secret. She just did not usually volunteer information about her niece that she was raising or mention her in casual conversation. On the few instances she had ran into the random student, or another faculty member, while being out in Rexford (Nikola in tow) it became rather obvious that she had a little person attached to her side. Nikola had begun calling her ‘Mama’ as well, and it melted Jasmin’s heart to hear those words roll off the tongue of her niece. She only wished Jesamin was here to see her precious little girl growing, in her spitting image. It helped, of course, that Jas and Jes had been twins because then no one could question if the little girl belonged to her or not. She had gotten lucky and found a very sweet girl to babysit Nikola, and it worked out fabulously because Nikola got along with her famously so she was not as hesitant leaving her with the babysitter. The Pine Lodge is where Liam had suggested going out to, and Jasmin would be lying if she said she was not the least bit excited. She had purposefully avoided parties where alcohol and drugs were rampant and in close range because of Jes’s rape. She partook in drinking alcohol at her apartment sometimes, after Nikola had been put to bed, but never socially. Getting dressed and throwing her accessories together, she let her blonde hair fall loose with its natural wavy curls. She thought it looked better natural and rarely did anything to it. Looking at her phone, she cursed at herself silently. Slipping her shoes on, she rushed to the living room where Nikola sat with the babysitter coloring. Picking the little girl up in her arms, she kissed her forehead softly and hugged her tight, swinging her around before setting her back down. ”Be good baby!” She called out to her as she headed to the door. Grabbing her bag off the living room coffee table, she looked to the babysitter. ”You have my cell, and the Pine Lodge number in case you need to reach me. Bed time by 8:30, no exceptions. You’re welcome to anything in the kitchen.” She instructed the girl. With one glance back at her niece, she headed to the door and to her car. She was going to be late, and she hoped that Liam would overlook the fifteen minutes. Pulling up in front of the Pine Lodge, it was 7:10. Ten minutes was better than the fifteen she thought she would be running late. Doing one last check in her car mirror, she got out and headed inside. Spotting Liam, she headed his way. Reaching him, she expressed her apologies adamantly. ”I’m so sorry Liam. The sitter was late.” She said softly, offering him a peaceful smile.

Liam sat in silence as he worked on updating grades onto the computer in front of him. He and silence were pretty good companions and as he thought about it, it wasn’t too much of a surprise that they’d gotten along so well. He frowned as he entered a few failing grades for a succession of students and shook his head. The material they were learning wasn’t difficult and it wasn’t like he refused to help them. No, he had offered these exact students help before and they had assured him that it was only a bad week and that there would be no more failing grades. His frown lightened as the grades progressively got better and he no longer felt the need to question his teaching. Not that he really cared about how they thought of his teaching. He had gotten his degree and did a decent job keeping the kids’ attention. For the most part his students seemed to be happy with the way he ran his classroom what with the laid back attitude and all. Though he had a feeling that his dark and mysterious aura had aided in driving away quite a few of the students, while others seemed to be attracted to it. Specifically the girls. Liam knew that he was good looking and that he had an irresistible bad boy personality, but he didn’t realize that it would draw so many of the students towards him. With the flourish of his hand he hit the enter button for the last student and then shut off his computer. His gaze fell on his watch before he stood and headed for the shower. He was sure that Jasmin wouldn’t appreciate the way he looked or smelled especially since he had just worked out before he started his grading.
It took about five minutes to get himself ready before he grabbed his keys and headed out the door. He had promised to meet his coworker at the Pine Lodge at seven and though he tended to be late to almost every one of his classes, he had decided that it would not be the nicest thing to do to Jasmin. It didn’t take too long to get to the lodge and he soon found himself immersed in a conversation with a gentleman beside him. He ordered himself a whiskey and rested an elbow on the bar as the man beside him talked about football. Liam had to laugh it seemed like the guy hated the game the way he talked about it though he was obviously a fan especially with his t-shirt depicting his favorite team. He was definitely not drunk enough to listen to this yet, so he slung back what was left in his glass and ordered another drink. His eyes lingered on the television as he watched the game and rolled his eyes at the error made by one of the players. He looked down and took another swig of his drink before he heard the voice of his coworker. Liam turned and returned her smile as he motioned for her to take the seat next to his. Not to worry, I don’t plan on leaving here for a while. He replied as he leaned back against the bar. So, I take it your classes are going well being that your standing here and in one piece. The students at Vineheart could be quite the pain when they wanted to be and he knew that one really well from experience.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- English had always been her favorite subject as she had chosen that as her major when attending Columbia as an undergraduate. Jesamin’s suicide early in her senior year certainly had shaken her resolve, but Jasmin knew she had to continue and finish her degree – if not for her, for Nikola. She had decided to put an emphasis on teaching when taking her classes because school had always fascinated her. Education was a very important thing for anyone, and it had always been encouraged by her parents. If you would have told her that she would have been teaching at a high school for royal children when she began earning her Bachelor’s, she would have told you that you were crazy – she had made the mistake of stereotyping the students before the school year ever began. Boy, had she been wrong on most counts. Some of them were serious about their grades and their work, yet others saw the time they spent in the classroom as just another opportunity, albeit a social one, comical one, etc. Grading papers had turned into a regular night activity – she was not exactly behind, but she liked to take her time. Jasmin preferred to give her students the benefit of the doubt and she tended to double-check every assignment that was graded, just to be sure. A lot of nights, the time simply got away from her and it was only best and had proven to be easier to get things done after Nikola was put to bed. Her niece meant everything to her, and she did nothing that was not in her best interest, but what else could she do? She was raising her and was ‘mom’ for all intents and purposes. Her blonde hair had always been considered one of her trademarks, along with her eyes. She had one blue and one green and the brightness of her hair drew attention to her eyes. There had never been a shortage of suitors, yet Jasmin had never shown much interest in the way of dating. School had been her number one priority, and when she lost her twin, all of that shifted to Nikola – something had taken the place of her education, and then getting her education meant providing a better life for the little girl. Running late was not something that was her usual forte, but occasionally it happened. Raising a child could do that. As she entered the Pine Lodge, the whole atmosphere changed from outside to the inside. It was a game day, and you could definitely tell by all of the drunken men sitting around the bar crowding the big screen TVs that adorned the walls. Coming up beside Liam, she took the seat beside his. As the bartender came to towards her, she ordered a rum and Coke. ”I guess it’s my lucky night then, huh? I seem to have gotten the company of the most sober man in here.” Laughing gently, she nodded her head to the bartender as he placed her drink in front of her. She took a few sips before acknowledging his next statement. ”Ah, so it would seem. I also managed to get a decent amount of sleep this week, so now it would seem you’re in luck as well.” She had never paid much attention to if any of her male students paid any extra attention to the attractive, new English teacher that had been gracing the walls of Vineheart for almost two semesters, but each of her students had provided their own challenges to get through. Motioning to his drink, she tilted her head to the side. ”What’s your poison?”

Liam leaned back against the bar and watched the game with the guys rolling his eyes at various comments they made throughout each play. He wished that his students would be as interactive and interested in his class as the guys at the lodge were with the game. It didn’t seem likely that his students were going to change anytime soon and since that was the case he had nothing against showing up to class with a hangover and a video in hand. Coming to class late and with a hangover was beginning to be something normal for him and he was doing better each time disguising it from the students. The videos seemed to keep the students happy, but whenever he’d announce that a report was going to be followed he’d get a great range of reactions. His favorite had to be the time one of his students got up threw a tantrum and then left the classroom, slamming the door behind him. He of course received an ‘F’ for the assignment since the movie was only to be played in class and the report written after the video was over. It gave Liam the chance to sleep a bit more before he had to take care of the athletes. He needed a clear head to access injury and do a good job with the preventative care and a hangover wouldn’t help him in the slightest.
When Jasmin sat down next to him he smirked at her comment and shook his head. It was a Thursday night and he had no intention of staying sober, especially with what he was going to have to deal with the following morning. He had assigned his students certain injuries to research and then they would have to give a five to seven minute presentation. They had only gotten through two today as he still had a few things to go over before they started presentations, but the first two were terrible and he did not want to be sober for the rest of them. It was going to be sunny in the classroom when he got there post drinking. Sunglasses and a bottle of aspirin, the combination of champions. Well the most sober man for now, I can’t promise that I’ll be sober a little later. He rolled his eyes as the guy sitting next to him laughed and jabbed him in the ribs with his elbow. That was the problem with game days, the guys got drunk and then listened to everybody’s conversations. This time he was willing to let it slide because it wasn’t really anything too important. Liam swallowed a bit more of the alcohol in his cup and smiled and her next comment. Maybe you should visit the casino then since you’re on good terms with lady luck and that would be a change for once being luck and I don’t really get along. No matter how hard he tried he’d never have luck on his side even if he carried a rabbit’s foot or found a four leaf clover. Things like that just didn’t work out for him and it was something he had learned the hard way. His gaze fell momentarily on the television to see the score of the game before returning back to Jasmin and glancing down at his drink. Whiskey. They unfortunately don’t have the good stuff here, but it’s better than nothing. He missed the stuff from Australia, though he had to admit that the Irish did a fantastic job with their whiskies as well. How about you? I’m sure you’d need something strong after the students we deal with.

-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Nikola was getting to the age where she was always on the move, and Jasmin was kept pretty busy when she was at home. Unlike a lot of parents these days, she actually kept her niece on a strict schedule – dinner was by a certain time, bathroom routine was then followed by a bed routine – and after she was down for the night (usually by 8 pm), Jas had the rest of the evening to herself. She kept the video monitor by her side every second that the two were apart when in the house. Nikola had been her first priority since Jesamin died, and after that came her career. She had pushed herself so hard in finishing school, and then getting a job so that she could provide for her niece the life that she knew she deserved. So far, she had been doing everything right when it came down to her job – showing up on time, being the dutiful teacher, staying late (if it was needed) and just being there for her students whenever they needed her to be there. She hated leaving Nikola at daycare to long and tried to always be there to get her before they closed, which was at 5 pm. Most days, she made it on time. Sometimes, however, she didn’t make it on time and it was extra money out of her pocket, but that little angel was worth every cent spent on her. This must have been all projects due week. Her students had been assigned a book report, with a twist. They had to present their book to the class in a presentation, with something extra – they were supposed to take something from the book and design it to share (art project, drama, etc). They had gotten through four that afternoon, and there were more still to be done. So far, things had been going well. The students had either actually listened for once, or they just wanted to get these done and out of the way so they had done what it took to make that happen. Laughing at his comment, she retorted with her own comment. ”Nothing wrong with that; we all have our weaknesses.” Watching the exchange between Liam and the guy beside him, she rolled her eyes at the exact time that he did and then she burst out laughing. Watching guys in a bar, especially when there were games on, made any bad day you could be having immediately better. As she momentarily downed the rest of her drink, she flagged down the bartender to order another rum and coke before acknowledging Liam again. ”Hey now, don’t say that. You’ve gotten my attention and that’s a hard thing to do mister. So, I believe you need to rethink your lucky streak. But I’d love to go to a casino, as long as you come with me.” She said with a smirk, looking his way. She had not had the luckiest life, but she was starting to see that you make your own luck; no one else could do it for you. As Nikola got older, she would understand what all Jasmin had done for her and that if she wouldn’t have, then Nikola would have been stuck. ”Rum and coke is usually my drink of choice.” She said, pointing to the glass that the bartender slid to her from across the bar. ”So, how on earth is a guy like you still on the market?” She asked him slyly. Once she had a drink in her, the words flowed without a filter; she was such a lightweight when it came to alcohol but that didn’t mean that she made stupid decisions when she drank.
