Nathan walked over to the science wing of Vineheart because he terribly missed one of his good friends. Klara, one of the Chemistry teachers, had been his friend since he was in grad school – she was in undergrad. They met, and she helped him through all of the pain of loss. What he needed at the time was a friend, and she must have really needed to be someone’s friend because she was perfect at it. They had remained in touch over all the years, even when Klara had gone to Europe or when Nathan was in the deepest part of his depression.
Now that they were both working at Vineheart, they were finally going to have the chance at becoming truly close again, and Nathan was thrilled. On this day, they were going apartment hunting for Klara. It would be good for them to catch up and also, Klara would have a second opinion on the apartments – and he could ask questions that she would never think of asking or if she forgot to ask anything.
Earlier in the morning, he had gotten ready as if this were sort of a date. He threw on his jeans, “Trust me I’m a Doctor” tee, and a grey pin-striped blazer over top. Then he threw on his matching pin-striped Chuck Taylor’s. He even did his hair, using pomade to get that perfect faux-hawk look. Picking up his glasses as he walked out the door, he threw them on – they didn’t make much difference in his actual vision.
He knocked quietly on her slightly opened office door and poked his head in. With his slightly British accent, he greeted her with, “’Ello!” Then he said, “Ready?”

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She put the last pin in her hair as she stared at the reflection staring back at her. The dark circles that should have been below her eyes were absent, though she knew that would change soon enough. They were due to start the school year in a little less than a month and there was already so much planning to be done. And she had yet to find a place to live outside of the school property. It wasn’t that she didn’t love her job and the school, the accommodations were great. But she wanted her own place, if she was going to remain in this job for as long as she could, she needed a more permanent home than the actual school. Plus half of her wardrobe and her things were still in storage and she was very annoyed by that fact. Sure the school was empty of students at the moment, only the staff that cleaned the rooms and of course cooked remained at the present time. A lot of the faculty had gone on vacation as well, but given her urgency to find a home, Klara had remained at Vineheart. She had not been alone obviously, her friend Nathan had been good company and he had even accompanied her a few times to look for apartments.
But the issue was that she still hadn’t found a place that seemed right. She had this feeling that there was this one apartment out there that would seem like the perfect fit. Rent was not an issue, the school paid her enough that she could get a decent sized house if she wanted it, and of course the fact that she had that trust fun she hardly ever touched was something else too. She knew her parents had set it up in hoped that she’d use it when she relocated for her job, but so far she hadn’t felt the need to dip into those savings. She was paid well enough that she was able to keep a good clothing budget along with everything else she had to cover. Obviously she was lucky in the aspect that student loans had never been an issue given her father’s high paying salary, not that Klara believed she was entitled to anything. She was aware of what the worth of a dollar was, and well that was yet another reason why that money had never been touched. But she was getting off track, she needed to find a place to live, and she hoped that among the few apartments they would visit today, was her future home. She left her room, because she had agreed to meet Nathan outside of her office, since there were a few lessons plans she needed to revise and she had left them there. She had gotten ready early knowing that she needed to check the lesson plans. She had gotten through the first one when she heard the door open and heard him speak. She put the pen down and turned her attention towards her friend.
“Yeah let me just grab my bag and we can head out” she said as she grabbed her bag that was hanging from the coat hanger, “Thanks so much for coming with me again, I’m sure it’s not your idea of an ideal afternoon”

Klara apologized for making him come with her, and thanked him too, and he shook his head. “What better could I have to do today?” He was being serious. For one, he would do anything for a friend – he was one of those people that, if a friend needed him, he didn’t try to fit them into his schedule; if a friend needed him he had NO schedule. His life revolved around his friends. If they needed something, he would make it happen. The other thing – really, what was he going to be doing? Reading. And, even though he was the literature professor, sometimes he just didn’t want to do anything related to reading or writing. Or, hell, even thinking.
They went to a few small apartments, but Nathan would always find something major wrong with them. Drafty windows, mold, cracks in the walls, among other things. Things that Klara shouldn’t have to worry about. And the ones that were merely okay – they were well overpriced. As he was driving, he saw a sign for a place to rent, but it was back a long driveway, surrounded by trees. He looked over at Klara as he turned on his turned signal. “Can’t hurt, eh?” He smiled at her.
As they approached the house, it became apparent that it was built for a family of, like, at least six people. But the price on the sign seemed in the budget for Klara if she had a roommate, so there was probably something majorly wrong with it. But it seemed new. It was large and white, with pillars and a balcony. “Something’s not right.” He said, “Something HAS to be wrong with it.” He pulled up to the three car garage and then paused for a moment. “I’ll get to the bottom of this. Maybe they forgot a zero on the sign.” As they walked towards the door, someone was actually coming out of the front door, and she turned and looked at them before locking it. Nathan hesitated to continue walking because the woman was obviously leaving, but she said “I have time for one more tour of the house. C’mon!” Nathan smiled and took Klara’s hand. It was nothing for him to take her hand and lead her about. She helped him through so much that it just seemed natural for him to help her cross the street or walk up stairs or through a door, just by taking her hand.
“Thanks for taking the extra time.” Nathan and Klara walked in – the place was BRAND NEW. Never even furnished. The landlord showed them around the apartment, and Nathan couldn’t see anything wrong with it, so he asked, “What’s with the price? Is the place haunted… or?”
She laughed and said that it was because it’s so far out from the rest of civilization. The landlord explained that she expected the tenants to mow the lawn and things like that, in exchange for a lower rental fee. If they needed something fixed, and could do it themselves, she would even reimburse them for that, if they had documented proof. Before walking out of the house, Nathan asked, “Do you have any takers?”
She explained that most people didn’t want to do the work that she expected, and then she said that she would randomly stop by and look at the outside of the place, to make sure that it seemed to be taken care of, as she still owned the house. Nathan paused for a moment and said, “Can Klara and I have five minutes?” He took Klara’s hand and walked with her into another room.
Getting a little quiet he said, “I think we should do this.” He looked in her eyes and said, “This place is big enough for the both of us. It doesn’t need a lot of maintenance, and when it does, I can do it. If it’s too big, she’ll hire a contractor.” He then added, “That is, if you would want to live with me.”

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She knew that he didn’t think it was that big of a deal but in all honesty he really didn’t have to drive her around. But it helped to have a second opinion when it came to apartments because she was a bit picky sometimes and she trusted Nathan to let her know when she was being too picky and vice versa. Either way she was thankful to him, and she appreciated his opinion. They saw a few apartments but of course Nathan was just as picky as she was in these matters and of course he was also worried about things that she couldn’t fix on her own. She appreciated that he cared enough to worry that the apartments had drafty windows and mold cracks, because she wouldn’t have even known that was what was wrong with them. There were other apartments that would have been passable but they were kind of pricy and she didn’t want to spend that much money on an apartment that was only okay. It would have been great if they were spectacular because she had no issue with money they paid them well enough at Vineheart and there was always the trust fund. But of course they hadn’t wowed her, and she was feeling a little down because yet again she had no place to live yet.
They were driving back to school when she noticed there was a sign up ahead, it seemed that Nathan saw it took because he seemed interested himself. As they got closer they saw that there was a house, it was pretty far back into the forest, with a particularly long driveway. She nodded when he smiled at her, because it did look like a very nice house. The closer they got, the larger it got and it definitely resembled the houses in the neighborhood where she lived in high school back in California. Most of the houses had been built with at least six bedrooms as this house seemed to be built, and it definitely looked new. She was curious as to why it was so cheap though, well cheap in the ways of a house that was this size. She nodded when Nathan said something wasn’t right, because it was what she was thinking herself. There had to be something wrong with a house that was that large, and had that type of price tag. Maybe someone had died in it, or like Nathan said maybe the realtor had spazzed and forgotten a zero on the sign.
They walked towards the door, and as they got closer they saw the door open and the woman who was obviously the realtor or the owner stepped out. She seemed to be leaving and she was just about to suggest they turn around but the woman said that she had time for another tour. Well they could at least look at it right? So she didn’t hesitate when he took her hand, and they walked inside the house. She watched carefully trying to find something wrong with the place as the lady showed them around but she really couldn’t find anything wrong with it. The closets were huge which was one thing that she loved because she would definitely have enough room for all of her clothes and nothing would have to remain in storage. But there had to be something wrong with it because there was no way that a house this size would be rented at that price. She was just about to ask about the prince when Nathan beat her to the punch and she bit back a laugh at what he said. The woman explained why it was priced that way and it made sense, it did seem like a lot of yard work but she was sure that it was a manageable thing. She really did find it to be a good deal, but of course she obviously couldn’t live in a house this big by herself, and she was about to say that they could go home but Nathan said that he wanted to talk so she let him pull her into a different room. She was a bit surprised when he said that they should do it because it wasn’t something she had been expecting. But she had no problem living with him, the house was large enough they would have their own rooms and bathrooms and they’d still have semblance of privacy. She thought about it for a few seconds, it was a good idea, it wasn’t too far from school and well it was ideal.
“Okay” she said nodding at him, “We should do this”

In the moment that Klara agreed to living with him, Nathan smiled widely and jumped a little. “This is going to be great.” He took Klara’s hand and they walked back to the woman, and Nathan said, “Where do we sign for this?”
The woman smiled and said that out of all the people she had met with, they were the only ones that she thought she would let have the place. She wanted people that were mature and seemed capable – and they were the first couple that she saw that in. As they were signing the papers, the realtor said that it seemed like they had been together for years, with the way that they moved around each other and that it seemed like Nathan was asking all the questions that it seemed like Klara had wanted to ask. Nathan looked up at the woman and said, “Ah, we’ve known each other since college, so … it’s natural for us to be this way.” He looked over at Klara and smiled. He nudged her a little.
They completed all of the paperwork and then headed out to the car. As soon as they were out of the long driveway, Nathan looked over at Klara and said, “I don’t know if that woman really thought we were together or if she was hitting on me.” He laughed a little as they drove off.
“So, we move in next week – this was an excellent idea, by the way.” Nathan was excited about it. He planned on a long tenure at Vineheart Academy, and, while the staff housing was spacious, it just wasn’t a place that Nathan wanted to stay at forever. He just never expected to find something so quickly. And it was extremely convenient that he would be living with Klara in that huge place. They got along very well and had been friends for years, so the transition would have been easy anyways. When Klara and her boyfriend from Europe broke up, it was around the same time that his ex-wife and children had passed away. They had each other as support, and they grew very close because of it. They practically alternated houses at that time, so Nathan knew that there would be little adjustment to be made when they moved in together this time.
“We should have a housewarming party. Invite some of you friends, seeing as I don’t have any.” Nathan laughed. The truth was that Nathan hadn’t made any friends in the area yet. Klara had been in Rexford for at least a year, so she was bound to have friends. “We can invite the entire staff and anyone else that we want.”

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -She nodded when he said it was going to be great because honestly she knew that she could definitely live with Nathan. Both Nathan and Halle had been her friends for the lengthiest periods of time, and she felt that she could live with either one of them just based on trust. And this house was going to be large enough that neither of them really did have to worry about any invasions of privacy. She was glad that the woman was nice enough to actually want to let them sign for the house. After all not many people would be willing to let two people actually sign for their house without looking up their backgrounds and other stuff like that. She was happy that this had worked out, and she just skimmed over the papers as they started signing them. She was already making mental plans of how they could decorate the house and of course where everything could go. After all so many of her things were still in storage but she was sure that her things wouldn’t even cover half of this place, it would definitely cover the closet but that would be about it. She looked up at the woman when she asked how long she and Nathan had been together, finding this observation humorous just because she and Nathan had been friends for years.
“And I secretly think he’s a mind reader too so I don’t really have to worry about questions when I’m around him” she added with a smile.
As soon as all the paperwork was done they headed out and Klara practically felt jittery with excitement that she officially had a place to call home. Even though she had spent the majority of the summer looking for a place to live, when she had come back from California, she hadn’t actually felt like she’d get a chance to feel all happy that she had found a place to live. She laughed, shrugging at Nathan’s comment because it really had been difficult to tell. Asking if you were together with someone was a sure way to find out if they were single or taken, she might have assumed they were dating and thinking about moving in together or maybe that they were married just because she knew Nathan still wore his wedding ring The only ring she wore was on her right hand, but some people would just think that she just didn’t wear a ring. But honestly she knew that this was a great idea, them living together because it wasn’t something that was foreign After all the drama that had passed in their lives over the years the two had often had sleep overs of sorts just comforting each other in the way you were supposed to comfort a friend. Klara felt that she had owed it to him to be there when his wife had passed with his children, she had been so sure that she would have never seen him happy again but he slowly seemed to be recovering. She was sure he was definitely a lot happier now than he was before.
“I think inviting the entire staff would be a good idea” she said, “That way no one feels left out. We have to be at Vineheart for meetings all of next week anyway, after we get all moved in we can leave their invitations in the staff boxes”

Kiss me. Infect me with your love. && Fill me with your poison. “Let’s go shopping for stuff!” Nathan just got extremely excited about the new place. He let out a relieved sigh and then jokingly said, “Now, I won’t have to be drug around by my shirt collar looking for a place for you to live anymore!” He laughed and flinched, waiting for Klara to hit him with her hand bag or something. “No, seriously, I think this was an excellent idea. Neither of us will have to worry about having a bad roommate or getting lonely. I won’t have to worry about something happening to you.” That was the truth. Nathan and Klara never lost touch when they were separated, so he would worry about her constantly when she went out late at night. They – their little trio, Halle, Klara, and Nathan – made a general rule to text each other when they got in at night, just so everyone knew the other was safe. It was sort of like checking in with your parents, sure, but it was just something that the three of them did – and never admitted it to another soul.
As they were in the car, Nathan’s phone chimed, and he looked to see who the text message was from – he had one blanket sound for text messages. “Heh! Look at that! Halle just told me that she got a new job – you will never guess where, Klara.” He looked over at her and told her. “Vineheart. Calculus and other advanced mathematics.” He shot her a quick congratulatory text and said that they had to get together and celebrate later that evening. “You should be getting a text from her soon, too.” The three of them were like peas in a pod – totally cozy together.
“It’ll be just like old times. Popcorn and movies. Nathan and his two babes.” And that was the way things were. Sometimes it was just two of them – Nath and Klara, Nath and Halle, or Halle and Klara – but they were always together in some form. And usually it had been all three of them. Klara and Nathan had been through the ringer with relationships, while Halle had been through the hell of losing her father. They all had pasts, and those severely different – yet just as severely similar – paths had brought them to one another. And the ability to get through all of it kept them together. They sure had changed over the years, but, as individuals, they didn’t change enough to not still be friends.
“We should invite Halle over before we have the party. But I think you are right about moving in and waiting until after the meeting week to have the party. Maybe we’ll give the invitations out on that Friday for the party which can be held the next Friday or Saturday?” he suggested. Then he laughed, “Hell, if the kids are partying, we should be allowed to as well.”
Nathan then pulled into a restaurant because it was supper time, and he was starving. Plus, they needed to celebrate their new place. “We’ll go shopping after supper or tomorrow. Right now, we need to celebrate our epic victory over the real estate industry!” They must have just beaten the supper rush because they were seated pretty much instantly.
They started looking over their menus, and Nathan randomly looked up at Klara and said, “I’ve been thinking about taking off my ring.” He let out a deep breath as if a great weight had been removed from his back. “You’re the first person I’ve ever said that out loud to.” He looked down towards his lap and then back up. “I’m just afraid that she’ll look down on me and call me an adulterer or something. What if she hates the idea of my taking of my ring? What if my kids wouldn’t approve?” He bit his lip and then said, “I can’t go the rest of my life like this, can I?” He didn’t know what to do. A lot of people moved on with their lives after the loss of the love of their life. But Nathan had so much trouble. He was definitely a lot better than he was when she had first died – hell, he was better than he was when he was at five years after she and the kids had passed away. And that was mostly thanks to Klara.
“I had gone out to California, recently, to see a friend – a female friend.” He blushed a little. “Things went well in the aspect that I think her presence in my life make me realize that I could take my ring off.” He then added, “Things didn’t go well in the way that… well, she’s pregnant with someone else’s kid, and she loves him.” He shrugged.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag Drifting through the wind Wanting to start again
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -She rolled her eyes at Nathan’s statement, throwing a playful shove his way. She knew that he wouldn’t have driven her around if he hadn’t of wanted to, and he was only joking with her anyway. But she was excited too, and it wasn’t just because she would be able to get all of her clothes to fit in one closet and most of her things could come out of storage but just because she had a place to call home. Well as long as the lady would rent it to them but they were safe for now, and now all they had to do was buy new furniture. Since she knew she’d be living at Vineheart for a good amount of time she hadn’t bothered to buy furniture because the staff quarters came furnished. But of course when she realized just how small they were, well small for her standards since she was used to pretty big rooms apart from her dorm room in college, so she knew she would need more space. But of course she hadn’t found a place, and some apartments were furnished so this would be a new experience for her. Since she hadn’t gone furniture shopping since before they moved to California since her apartment in New York had been furnished as well.
“Aww look at you, you care about me” she teased lightly, “But I do know that you are a great roommate, and plus you can always knock someone out if they try to break in”
That last part was a joke because she was pretty certain no one would be breaking in at all. After all they were basically surrounded by empty land, nowhere for robbers to hide. They were in the car then, and she heard Nathan’s phone alert him that there was a new message, she waited to see if he was going to tell her who it was. She smiled when he relayed the message, so Halle had taken her advice. Some of the older staff had decided to retire, so they had been in need for a Calculus teacher, knowing how that was Halle’s subject she had emailed her best friend to let her know. She hadn’t been aware she had actually applied for the job, but there had been no doubt in her mind that her friend would get it if she applied. As he said that she’d be getting a text soon, her phone rang from her bag and she got it out smiling. She sent a reply telling her that she already knew thanks to Nathan and that she was excited to have them working together. She was giddy with excitement now, not only did she have a place to call home, but her other best friend was her coworker. This was definitely looking like an awesome year. She laughed when Nath said that it would be like old times, she remembered he had said that once out loud and they had all started laughing.
“Oh yeah, I remember everyone thought that you were gay because you were hanging out with us and not with either one of us” she said, “I had to convince at least five different people that no you weren’t gay, and no we weren’t sleeping with you. You were just our best friend. People can be so dirty minded sometimes”
She nodded as he said that they should invite Halle, once they got the place furnished. She was sure that she might even want to come with them to pick out furniture, because she was like that. Either way they definitely had to just sit down and catch up. Before they even though about having the house warming they had to invite people, and they would be having meetings the week before school started, maybe the Saturday when everyone was back, before school started on the first, would be the ideal time to have it. After all most of the staff would be back by then as well and they could just make it a nice event. She already was making a mental list of who she wanted to invite, just because they were the closest of her friends in the staff. Well she liked all of the staff at Vineheart, but there were some that she talked with more on a daily basis who she would love to have with them. Just as she was thinking this she saw that Nathan had pulled into a restaurant which was good because she was starving. She hadn’t been expecting the apartment hunting to take so long, so she had had a light lunch expecting to be back before dinner. She laughed when he said that they had to celebrate their triumph over the real estate industry. They were seated by then, and she was peeking at her menu when he spoke again. She was surprised to listen to what he said, so much that she actually set down the menu. He had never talked about taking off the ring. She knew how important it was to him, because he thought that his wife would get offended if he ever took it off.
“Nath, she would never call you an adulterer you are one of the most faithful guys I have ever met. If anything I’m sure she wants you to move on. She would want you to be happy, because you deserve it” she said as she leaned forward to take his hand a squeeze, “If you want to take it off, you should.
She listened as he explained about the person that he had seen in California. Whoever this person was, Klara was sure that she needed to find out and send them a thank you note. He had never even thought of taking his ring off, and now he was seriously thinking about it. It was a sign that he was healing, something that she was sure would happen, but she hadn’t known when it would. She had been there for him after it had happened, and she had tried to be his rock during that whole dilemma in his life. All she honestly wanted for him was to be happy, and now that he was considering actually taking off his ring it meant that he was finally ready to move forward in that way. But of course there was always a catch, and she chewed on the inside of her cheek as she listened to the fact that this woman was pregnant and in love with someone else.
“Well, the question here would be, how do you feel about her?” she said, “If you feel ready enough to take off that ring for her, I think that maybe you should just be there for her, and see where things go from there. Chances are, something could develop there, and it could potentially be something wonderful”
