Aurore sat alone in the common room, her limbs draped lazily across a comfy chair. Her hair was pulled up into a bun messily, and an old torn-up history book was plopped in her lap. A vacant expression looked to be permanently etched into her face as she tiredly read over paragraph after paragraph of the bland material that the textbook contained. She read the last sentence she was required to read from the textbook in a murmur under her breath, then a long, drawn-out sigh escaped her fine pink lips. She slammed the book closed, sending up a fluff of dust. Then, she threw it down onto the floor beside her chair, making an obnoxiously loud noise. She ran her hand through her shoulder-length curly blonde locks, before she pulled herself up into a criss-cross position in the chair. Setting her hands over the armrests, she glanced her olive green eyes around the room with mild curiosity.
The room was completely empty, without a soul in sight (aside from Aurore, of course). It was actually pretty lonely. Not that she cared, really. Mostly, she was impartial to the whole "being social" thing. She really didn't care if she was talking to someone or not, and she felt indifferent if they were there. She was content with being by herself, and didn't really need anyone else around. However, at the same time, she kinda enjoyed having someone to talk to. Though, of course that depended on whom that person was. She could handle people like Rylie, or her roommates, but she absolutely couldn't stand the insanely gossipy, cliquey girls that seemed to strut around Vineheart's campus like they owned the place. Just thinking about them made Aurore shudder to herself. She shook all of these thoughts from her head, but they were soon replaced as her head snapped over to the common room's entrance, from where she could swear she heard footsteps...
"Hello?" she softly called out to where the sound was coming from, her French accent laced heavily into her words. "is someone there?" Someone I can stand, preferably? She thought that last part to herself, almost snorting aloud as the thought crossed her mind. "You might as well come out. You can't hide from me..." She said in a deep, mysterious (and slightly creepy) voice. Afterward, she let out a little sinister chuckle, trying her best to make it sound like the kind of disturbing cackles they use in the movies she always used to watch. The ones with the evil witches who plotted to try and deceive or even kill the protagonist, but usually never ended up succeeding.

Charlotte needed some time to relax. It had been a very busy week full of tests and homework. She needed some alone time. Some me time. Most of her other friends were busy doing other things anyways. But if they weren't she would be out with them. The only place she could think of that there wouldn't be many people would be the commons room. Sometimes the commons room was full of people and other times nearly empty. It really depended. As she left her dorm she grabbed her iPhone. Charlotte was very attached to her iPhone. To tell the truth she had no idea how she had lived without it. Her iPhone kept her in touch with all of her friends. It was almost a piece of her social life. There was no way she was going to leave it behind. She could miss some major piece of gossip.
The hallway leading from her dorm room to the commons room was dark and shadowy. It seemed like a serial killer could be hiding in the shadows or behind a door. Not to mention the stories she had heard from some 5th years. There were a great range of stories. Ranging from killers in the basement to ghost student. No one knew who had started the stories or where they came from. Charlotte shivered at the thought of all the stories. She hated scary stories and horror movies. Charlotte would never admit it but she was a very easily scared person. On her first day at Vineheart an older student had told her a ghost story about the school and it had kept her up all night.
Finally relief came when she saw the door to the commons. The ballet flats she was wearing were a size too big so they kept on making a flopping noise were ever she went. Now if she had been in a scary movie that would give away were she was. As she entered the room she thought she heard a voice. Must be the wind she thought after all it did look like a storm was coming. Now were should I sit. She turned to sit down on a couch when she heard a creepy mysterious voice say "You might as well come out. You can't hide from me..." Charlotte spun around to see a girl draped over a chair. In surprise Charlotte couldn't help but let out a blood curling scream. "AHHHHHH" After she got over the initial shock she was angry. Where in the world had this girl come from? "You scared the crap out of me! What are you doing hiding around the commons like that?!"

Aurore watched Charlotte as she screamed, all the while laughing loudly. Normally, she would've probably made sure she hadn't given the other girl a complete heart attack before laughing at her. But, given the circumstances, she couldn't help it. She was tired, a little loopy, and to be honest, the sight of Charlotte screaming like Aurore was a murderer was pretty freaking hilarious. At least, in Aurore's eyes it was.
So, she laughed, and quite obnoxiously at that. As she laughed, she watched the other girl's expression turn from frightened to angry in a split second, and Aurore's laughter slowly died down as she realized that she was being yelled at. She listened with rapt attention as the girl accused her of hiding, then cut in, with an amused smirk on her face. "It's not like I was lurking in the shadows with a knife or something. I was sitting here the whole time. I said "Hello" when you were in the hallway." She explained, trying her best not to sound arrogant, but not really succeeding. "Besides, I can do whatever I want. Despite what you may think, you don't own the place."
This came out a little snobbier than she would've liked, and she didn't normally like talk to people like this. It just kind of annoyed her that this girl was actually yelling at her because she had (unconsciously, mind you) scared her. It wasn't her fault the girl couldn't hear her before, and it wasn't her fault the girl didn't see her. So, she was definitely not taking the blame for this one. No way in hell.
She let out another laugh, shaking her head softly, causing some of her soft blonde tresses to fall loosely into her face. This girl seemed to be one of the people she had been thinking about earlier- one of the bitchy girls she couldn't stand. The ones who cared more about their makeup than their parents. The ones who ate less all day than Aurore ate just for breakfast. The ones Aurore despised, because of their complete ditziness and inability to care about anyone besides themselves. Maybe she was jumping to conclusions about Charlotte, but just from looks, that's what Aurore inferred she was like. Of course, for Aurore, first impressions were kind of everything. So, this impression could quite possibly stick with her forever. And trust me when I tell you that this impression was definitely not a good one. Not by a long shot.

Charlotte became even angrier when the girl started laughing at her and than interrupted her. "Well excuse me! For all I know you could be hiding a knife somewhere!" Charlotte was usually trusting of people but this girl seemed like she could be hiding a knife. For all Charlotte this girl could have escaped from a maximum security prison. Once a long time ago she had seen a movie were a serial killer escaped a maximum security prison. He would sneak around in the shadows and kill people. The girl seemed to be enjoying this. Which irritated Charlotte more. She knew from watching other people fight not to freak out. She should have known better. The other girl was staying calm and she had just blown up. Great just great.
Charlotte noticed the girl had a french accent. France and Monaco were right next to each other. Charlotte had visited France a few times but never met the french royal family. So she didn't really know if this girl was a french royal or not. When the girl asked who she thought she was and if she owned the place. Snapping back but not quite yelling she replied. "I can own the place if I want to. No one said I can't ." This girl was really starting to irritate her. Couldn't she have just apologize for scaring her and they both could have moved on? "Do you own that chair?" She had snapped it out before even realizing how ridiculous it sounded. Whenever Charlotte got mad she would yell the most ridicules things. Once when she had been younger she had gotten into a fight with her older brother had had yelled even weirder things than that.
In angry rage she stomped over to the couch and flung herself onto it. "Now if you'll please excuse me I will sit and use my iPhone." It was hard to believe that she had come down to the commons to relax. Doing homework would have been easier to relax than getting in a screaming match and being scared half to death.

Aurore tried her best not to laugh aloud at Charlotte's comeback about her actually having a knife, and she put her hand over her mouth as if she was thinking so she could hide her smirk. As irritating as this girl was, Aurore was still trying to be a little nice. Her parents had always told her to be nice to everyone, no matter what. This rule had always been a bit hard for Aurore personally, given her snarky and occasionally rude nature. However, she still tried her best, to prevent the ruining of her parents reputation. That had always been important to her, as she didn't want to be any sort of an inconvenience to her parents. In fact, she didn't really like them to notice her at all.
She shook away her thoughts before replying to Charlotte's rhetorical question. "No, I don't suppose I do own this chair. However, I am permitted to use it, given I go to school here." She answered as calmly and kindly as possible, then gave a forced smile and once again tried her best not to laugh as Lottie said she was going to be on her iPhone. "Have fun with that." she remarked carefully, before digging out her own iPhone from the deep dark depths that were her pocket.
She slid her finger across her phone's screen and unlocked it with her four-number passcode (which was her birthday). She immediately began to play on an app she had recently become addicted to, one that she couldn't quite recall the name of. She couldn't quite focus on the game, though, as she was now suddenly deeply aware that she wasn't alone in the room. She normally liked silence, but this complete and utter kind was just awkward. Especially when there was someone else in the room with her. It made her slightly uncomfortable, but she just shrugged off those thoughts and went back to her game, trying her best to focus on that, rather than Charlotte.

Charlotte pressed the on button for her iPhone. It was an older one but she had heard the iPhone 5 was coming out soon and she hoped to get it. Her iphone was almost 2 years old. Honestly she had no idea why she had it for so long. As she sat she realized how awkward this literally was. A few moments they had been fighting and now they were both just calmly playing on there iPhone. That was one thing Charlotte hated more than being scared. Awkward silences. Awkward silences were just....... awkward. As she played temple run and her little virtual explorer ran faster and faster from the evil monkeys her mind raced. Should she apologize or would that be a sign of weakness? Should she sit her during this awkward silence? Faster and faster the little virtual person ran, jumped, and ducked from all the obstacles.
Finally the game beat her and the little person fell to their death with the evil monkeys right behind her. In some ways she was like the little virtual person as she got up."Ok, I can't take this awkwardness. Lets just make a truce. That way we can both not feel awkward about sitting in here and we won't fight." Whenever Charlotte got mad she would only be mad for like 5 min. Then she was over it. At the moment she just wanted not to fight. She was sick of fighting. Hopefully the other girl wouldn't think she was insane asking about a truce. Hopefully she wouldn't seem like some lets all live in peace weirdo.

Aurore put her game on pause and looked up as Charlotte started talking, all the while examining her closely. The way her face was set, with a natural sneer and scrutinizing eyes, made it look like she was judging Charlotte harshly. However, in reality, she was simply making sure that this girl was being completely honest with her thoughts, and wasn't about to laugh in her face and spread gossip at a mile a minute about how gullible Aurore was.
After a moment of close scrutiny, she concluded that Charlotte was in fact being honest, but Aurore wasn't exactly sure just how she felt about it. She shoved her phone back deep into her fairly large pockets before speaking. "Okay, fine. No awkwardness, and no fighting. Mostly because I don't even know your name, so it would be pointless to fight." Aurore answered after merely a second of hesitation. "However, this doesn't, under any circumstances, make us "friends". Not even in the lightest use of the word." She put air quotes around the word "friends", and shook her head slightly when she was done talking, as if to officialize that they were hardly even acquaintances, and that Charlotte shouldn't expect her to be all buddy-buddy with someone she doesn't even know the name of. Not that she assumed Charlotte was expecting this, but Aurore just wanted to play it safe. How did that saying go? It was better safe than sorry.
"By the way, call me Aurore." She quickly cut in an introduction before she let Charlotte respond to anything she had just said. Crossing her legs, she ran her fingers lightly over the soft fabric of her striped knee-socks as she waited for Lottie's answer. It was an old habit of hers that she never was able to escape. Whenever she wore socks higher than the ankle, she couldn't help but run her fingers over them. It had started when she was little, because she would do it to calm herself if she was being yelled at, or was watching an argument, or put in any form of high-stress situation. Back then, she wore knee socks almost every day. Once she started wearing them less often, she would only actually do it on the rare occasions that she did wear the right socks, merely because it was her way of curing boredom. That's what she was doing at the moment- curing boredom, as she watched Lottie's face for any form of emotion.

As Charlotte talked she noticed the girl was almost glaring at her as she talked about a truce. It did not help with the entire 'feeling awkward thing'. Charlotte hated being glared at but because of the truce she didn't say anything. She didn't want this girl to think she was a complete spoiled brat. Charlotte did admit that she might be at least a 'little' spoiled. But weren't you suppose to be at least a little spoiled when you're royal?
"Agreed" She calmly stated when the girl said it would not make them friends. They were no were close to being friends. Most people didn't meet any of their friends by fighting when they had only known of each other for like 5 minutes. "It is pointless for us to fight. By calling a truce it just means we won't be screaming at each other but we will still not be friends." Charlotte felt a headache coming on from all this yelling. Whenever she got into a big fight she got a headache along with it. It always happened. The bigger the fight the worse the headache. She also got headaches when other people were fighting. Except they were worse when she was fighting with someone else.
When the girl introduced herself as Aurore she decided to start over with a new start. "Nice to meet you Aurore. I'm Charlotte." Extending her hand to shake. Aurore must think she was bipolar. One minute she was all angry and fighting and now she was calmly introducing herself. Noticing the girl's socks she said. "I like your socks." She didn't want this girl to completely hate her. Besides they were nice socks.

Aurore bit her bottom lip slowly and thoughtfully as she listened to Charlotte's reply, but her eyes were not on the girl. Rather, they were absently lingering at some random spot on the wall opposite to her. Her eyes flickered quickly to Lottie's face when she was done talking, and Aurore decided to respond. "Okay. I can deal with that." She replied finally.
She looked at the other girl's outstretched hand for a moment, then brought her own hand out. Briskly shaking Charlotte's, she then pulled it back away and lazily let it fall back into her lap with a light slapping sound. "Nice to meet you too, I guess. And thank you," She wiggled her toes in her socks absently while she spoke, the whole time looking down at her feet, and thinking carefully to herself.
Does this girl have multiple personality disorder? Aurore wondered, inwardly shaking her head to herself. As mean as the inner question might seem, she was seriously wondering if it was a possibility, given that the girl switched from an angry spit-fire to an innocent girly-girl who complimented people all the time, in a matter of minutes. This wouldn't be the first time someone has acted like that in her presence, but it was definitely the weirdest time. Because, of course, most of the time she wasn't being screamed at the way that Charlotte had done.
She shook all these thoughts away, though, because she honestly didn't know what to make of them. These kind of things always really confused her. She was glad nothing like this ever involved her personally, because she probably wouldn't know what to do if it did. She let her mind wander for a moment as she thought of this possibility. What if I did have a disorder? She asked herself.
This thought scared Aurore greatly, but she didn't show it on her face. She preferred her personal thoughts to be kept personal. So, instead, she left her natural, slightly brooding expression set into her face, and let her eyes flicker back to Charlotte, hoping the other girl didn't notice any weird expressions passing on her face, but at the same time not really caring at all. They weren't friends, they were hardly acquaintances. And, even if they were, she probably still wouldn't care. There was a quote her mother always used to tell her; "Be yourself. Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind". She didn't remember who it was by. She repeated this quote in her mind now, letting the words sink in and finalize themselves in her brain. She decided then and there that this would be her life motto.

Charlotte flopped back down with a bounce. She loved it when couches had a little bounce. Some couches were too hard and others were to soft. This one was just right. It was her Goldilocks couch. Charlotte's dark eyes scanned the Aurore's face trying to read what she was thinking but it was hard to tell. Aurore had a look that was ether very deep in though or she thought she was insane. Or possibly both. Once when Charlotte had been only 4 or 5 a crazy man tried to kill her father and just happened to be a family servant. He had a personality disorder. Charlotte hoped she would never get any kind of disorder of the mind. Then a terrible thought crossed her mind. What if I am insane but I don't know it?! Wasn't that what Alice In Wonderland was all about? What if she had fell down a rabbit hole and not known it?!
Panic filled her mind and face. Was there a quiz online to tell if you were insane? What if Aurore was a ghost and she didn't know it? She was insane wasn't she?! Taking a deep breath she asked Aurore in a voice she barely recognized as her own. "How can you tell if you're truly insane? Not 'fake' insane but really insane." Maybe she was just over reacting, but you could never be too sure. Maybe she was just tired. The busy school week had kept her from getting enough sleep but who knew? Maybe that's what all the clinically insane said.

Thoughts about her facial expressions and cliquey girls continued to bounce around in Aurore's mind as she gazed around the room. Her eyes flickered around the room in such a way that it almost looked as though she were looking for something on the wall, like an answer to an unasked question. Her lips quivered slightly, as if she was about to say something, but whatever it was that she was going to say was interrupted when Charlotte voice cut into her thoughts. "How do you know if you're truly insane?" Lottie's voice echoed through her mind. Honestly, she didn't know the answer. How would you know? If you were insane, you would've been born like that, and you would've gotten used to whatever it felt like. You wouldn't know any better. It wasn't like someone else could tell you- sure, doctors diagnose different disorders and things, but she had read somewhere that sometimes they diagnose untrue things to get money from the parents when they buy the medicine. Remembering this brought on another question- how would you know whether or not your doctor was lying to? You wouldn't know any better. You could be completely insane and not know it, or you could be totally normal and have all your doctors lie and say you have a disorder. Heaving a sigh, Aurore finally opened her mouth to answer, her eyes making their way back to Charlotte. "I guess you wouldn't know. Not for sure, anyway. You may suspect, or others may suspect, but it wouldn't be for sure whether or not you really had a problem." She hated that word. "problem", as if the people who had disorders were abnormal, and needed to be fixed. As if they weren't people at all, but merely troubles or bothers that needed to be solved before life could go on as normal. Just saying the word make her think ill of herself, and she honestly wouldn't blame Lottie if the other girl started yelling again, got up and left, or even if she came and slapped Aurore. In fact, if anyone would've said that to Aurore, the French Princess would probably do one if not all of the above.

Charlotte rested her head on her chin and thought. Was it even possible to tell if you were insane. Because obviously if you were insane you wouldn't think you were insane. You would think you were perfectly normal. When Charlotte was around the age of ten or eleven she had read the book Alice in Wonderland and saw the Disney and Tim Burton movie. In some ways it was an Alice in Wonderland phase but now that she thought about it the book seemed to talk about if people were truly insane. Was Alice insane. A girl falling down a rabbit hole... That was strange. Maybe she should reread the book. Charlotte was almost sure it was somewhere around her bedroom. Lottie was startled out of her though by Aurore's answer of I guess you wouldn't know. Not for sure, anyway. You may suspect, or others may suspect, but it wouldn't be for sure whether or not you really had a problem. This made her head spin even more. If she could she would run to the top of the building and scream HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR INSANE. But of course that wouldn't be proper. Plus she didn't think she was insane.
But again what if she was wrong? At that moment Charlotte stopped her train of thought. She was just not going to think about it anymore. That was that. "So what are you going to do for summer vacation?" She asked Aurore hoping to change the subject with a half smile half grimace. Lottie was absolutely sick of thinking about being insane. She was making herself feel insane talking about it this much. Hopefully Aurore wouldn't think of her as being bipolar by first turning into the incredible hulk, smiling and laughing, than worrying and freaking out, and then lastly being happy and smiley again.

Aurore was quite surprised when Charlotte almost immediately changed the subject, but a part of her was relieved. Thinking about being insane was starting to freak her out a bit, because she didn't want other people to be scared of her. At the same time, though, it was a bit weird how Lottie kept changing subjects the way she did. Anastasie guessed it was because the other girl thought things instead of spoke them aloud. Aurore knew quite a few people like that, and none of them lingered on a subject for more than a few seconds. It was a bit hard to keep up sometimes, but if you paid attention, the conversations were actually quite nice. Fairly short, too.
Pushing these thoughts away, Aurore went to answer the question. "Well, I'm probably going back home to France. You know, visiting my family and all that. I don't really have many other plans, though, so a few spontaneous vacations may arise." She shrugged after she finished speaking, to show that her improvised summer breaks were nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, almost every summer break for as long as she could remember was something completely offhand. Before she was old enough to travel alone, she usually asked her brothers or sister to take her somewhere new. She liked unplanned vacations better, as they were less stressful. You didn't have a certain schedule to maintain, you could go wherever you pleased, come and go to different areas whenever you wanted. It was just Aurore's style of doing things.
"What about you? Do you have any plans yet?" said the young French girl in a conversational tone, trying her best to be polite, holding back all the snarky comments that were all over her tongue. She knew it was wrong to assume things about people she hardly knew, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Lottie was just another spoiled rich girl. It just made her want to be mean, which wasn't something she needed to be doing. She shook off the feeling with an outward shiver, passing it off for being cold by clutching her arms and rubbing them as if to keep warm afterwards.

Charlotte couldn't help but feel relief wash over her. Thank goodness they didn't have to talk about going insane anymore. It made her feel like she was going to have a panic attack. Charlotte loved to talk especially about her plans for summer. Her birthday was coming up soon and she wanted to plan the party by herself. Her parents had reluctantly said yes unsure whether to let her. They did of course but Lottie wanted to prove them wrong about thinking twice. It was her first big birthday and she would get to plan it! "Well my birthday's coming up and I'm planning it." She replied while happily bouncing on the couch. "You should come." She was worried she would sound rude to Aurore if she didn't invite her. They had already gotten off to a bad enough start without Aurore feeling left out.
"Other than that I'll probably just be hanging out in Monte Carlo with my brothers. We might travel a little and do other royal things." A smile spread across her face thinking of going home for over a week. She hadn't been home for a long amount of time. Charlotte loved Monte Carlo and Monaco for that matter with a passion. She had no reason why but she always felt accepted there. Especially at the beach. Lottie had always wanted to go to a public beach like all other normal people but sadly she could only go to private beaches for her safety. Yet another downside of being a royal. This summer was going to be an amazing summer she was sure of it. At least she hoped so.

Aurore listened to her talk about her birthday party with mild interest, tilting her head to the side gently when Lottie said that she should come to it. Having just met eachother, she wasn't sure if she would feel completely comfortable going. But, it was the thought that counted, and it was nice to think that Charlotte put enough thought into it to invite her as to keep her from feeling left out. Despite the fact that she most likely wasn't going, Aurore nodded politely and said, "Maybe I will come, with a small, polite smile.
She listened with slightly more interest as Charlotte talked about going to Monte Carlo over the summer, inwardly wondering if she knew any of Lottie's brothers, but assuming she didn't considering she didn't know many people at the Academy just yet. "I've never been to Monte Carlo. Is it as nice as everyone says it is?" She asked, raising her eyebrows and tilting her head in a questioning way. She'd always wanted to go there, but she didn't know anyone who would recommend it to her, so she wasn't sure whether or not to try it. She usually always got recommendations before she went anywhere, because she didn't want to end up somewhere annoyingly boring or something.
Thinking about it now, though, Aurore wondered if she should maybe try going there this summer. It would be a change, considering she'd never been. It would also be kind of cool, assuming her parents would let her go alone, to experience how different it was from things she knew. She added Monte Carlo to her mental list of places to go, unsure of whether she should try it this summer or wait until the next.
