She had never found it hard to get along with children – that was one reason she had become a teacher. She could find the simplest joy in being around children and that could help keep her depression at bay. She had struggled with it for ten years, and since being around Ned and Alyssa, she hadn’t felt it the first time. That was a new record – five months straight with no flare ups. She hadn’t created scars in over two years, the medication had seemed to help on that part of her depression in that it had cut out her self mutilation. She’d spent the last years of her high school career being raised by a family that was not her own, but now she called them her own. It warmed her heart to know they were people like that still left in the world – those that could take a child and raise it, when it wasn’t theirs.
Shutting the door behind them, she looked to him. “I was more than ready to get out of that house. It has been so crazy the past few weeks.” She said honestly. Between coming back from New York, and getting all of their belongings moved, and then trying to unpack as well as prepare for the new school year, she was exhausted almost every day. Joining him at the base of the doorstep, she offered him a smile. “You are very welcome. I wouldn’t say if it wasn’t true.” She said gently. Like most females, she enjoyed shopping, but she also knew when she had enough. And clothes and shoes she definitely had enough of. She rarely kept clothes from season to season, but that was just because she loved shopping too much, but then she did have some clothing that she kept around simply because of the way it fit or what she was comfortable in.
“Then I shall prepare myself accordingly and wrap her up in as just as big of a hug.” Signe replied, grinning at the thought of Alyssa. As they walked to his car, she waited as he opened the door. “Thank you.” She said to him in response of the gentlemanly action. Listening to his description of the place, she smiled. “It sounds perfect. I prefer smaller places than bigger ones anyway, more intimate.” She said softly. She leaned back in the seat as he drove, and the ride wasn’t very long, five minutes tops. She stood up on the ground as he opened the car door and she, once again, looped her arm through his. “It looks wonderful.” She said, as they headed inside. -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

"Alyssa will like that," he said with a smile in Signe's direction, knowing exactly what his daughter would do. If he knew her right that is, it would be a lot of hugging and thank you-ing and definitely a lot of chatter. The older the girl would get, the more difficult it would be to somehow raise her without making mistakes, he knew. It was in times like those that Ned knew he would somehow need to incorporate a female figure into his daughter's life, otherwise she would turn out a total savage. He had confidence in his own skills, but that didn't mean he was overconfident. Not at all. When it came to Alyssa, he never knew where he stood, and he never knew what would happen next, absolutely.
Once they were at the actual spot, the small, quaint restaurant he'd discovered completely by accident the first week he'd ever been to Vineheart and Rexford, Ned smiled, a little more relaxed. He would be able to unwind tonight and not worry about Alyssa for once. She was in the capable hands of her babysitter. "I like to come here when I need time to think," he told Signe on momentary inspiration, "that's usually when I need a break from parenting. It's not long, never long, but sometimes I just need time for myself." He felt ... oddly good with her arm looped through his. He was enjoying the feeling, he found. That was definitely a good sign.
They went through the doors and Ned was greeted by the waitress, who knew him since he came quite frequently. The pair was lead to an inconspicious table in the middle of the dining space. There was soft music in the background from the radio, since the band was still setting up. But whatever artist would play, there would never really be music that was heavy or intolerable. Just enough for the scenery. Ned pulled Signe's chair out for her with a smile. "I hope you won't get bored of this - but my mother always raised me in a way that it's the woman who's important. I try to do my best." He didn't know why he felt the need to explain himself, or maybe even apologise - maybe because he was ten years her senior. It could show.

She didn’t know Ned’s whole situation (yet anyway) but she knew that he had done a fine job of raising Alyssa thus far by himself, but she knew Alyssa would need a mother figure one day. Ned could only do so much, not that she didn’t think he wouldn’t be able to handle it, but there were some things only a mother could do. Signe knew exactly what he was going through, it had been just her and her father until his death. She liked to think she had turned out alright, the whole depression issue surely was understandable given that she was orphaned as a teenager and in such a freak accident. She nodded her head. “I imagine she will. Just wait until I get the dog. We may have to fight for her attention then.” She said teasingly. The arm looped through his own was something that had never felt at ease with anyone else. But then again, anytime she had gone on dates, she didn’t usually like touching them at all. She knew most of the guys her or Brynlee ever decided to date were only after one thing – especially when their hair was blonde. It annoyed her that guys only ever wanted one thing. The girls knew they were pretty, but they also knew they were smart and could do a whole lot better. Heck, they had once or twice not even finished a date because of those circumstances. She’d taken time off from dating for a while which was why she was cheery tonight. Listening to his explanation, she smiled. “Everyone needs time for themselves, even wonderful parents.” She said softly. “Don’t think anything of it, no one can blame you for needing your time to think and to be alone.”
She stood at his side as happy as she could be, just taking in the overall ambiance of the place. Looking around, she deemed it very appropriate. This was just the kind of place she loved coming to. Low key, small, not very crowded. The music playing over the radio was just the right level, not to overpowering. She could see the band’s equipment had not been to fully set up yet, but that didn’t phase her – she trusted Ned’s judgement and knew that the band would probably not be overpowering either. She smiled at him and sat down gratefully. “Are you kidding? I could never get bored of a gentleman.” She said with a wink. “Your mother taught you well. You’ve always been a perfect gentleman.” -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

Ned was actually very well known in this little restaurant, though he didn't think it was important that he explained that to Signe at the moment. The first time he'd come to Montana, Rexford specifically, he'd felt the loneliest he'd ever felt. Being away from England was one thing, but having a small girl at home who missed that countryside was another. Luckily Montana was even more beautiful than England so Alyssa had gotten over the homesick feeling quickly, but it had taken Ned a while to get over the melancholy feeling. This was the place that helped a lot, given that it had beautiful views through the windows, which right now were hidden in darkness. It was nice to come here and think.
He gave Signe a smile at what she said, but didn't comment anymore. He didn't have to go into any sob stories tonight, because he didn't feel like it and he didn't think she'd appreciate it. Besides, tonight was slightly different anyway, this could be classified as a proper date, there was no Alyssa and no daylight and the restaurant was the perfect scenery. So he was going to enjoy himself. The waitress brought them their menus and smiled, hoping that they would enjoy the evening and also saying that the band would start playing in about half an hour - there had been a delay because of some technical difficulties. Ned wouldn't have minded the radio either, but there was something to be said about live music.
"I'll let her know that," he laughed lightly at Signe's words, "I'm sure she'll be thrilled. It's sort of something we still upkeep though; I'm from an old English family. Tradition means a lot to my parents, and to me as well." His shoulders shrugged lightly before he looked at the menu in front of him. "What would you like to eat? I can tell you that basically everything in here is very good, but I personally prefer their Italian meals," he explained while turning the page of his little booklet. He already knew what he was going to eat, but he was letting Signe order first.

Brynlee and herself had not gotten the chance to do much exploring. They had gone out to the Icebox before the end of the last term, but that was simply because they had both needed a break. Brynlee had been here for a few weeks before Signe joined her – she’d had loose ends to tie up before leaving New York City. This was the kind of place she loved, more than a typical restaurant. Signe wasn’t much for partying, let alone crowded places. Yes, she got along with most anyone, but that didn’t mean she liked having to talk to people simply because it was so full of people that was all there was to do. She preferred low key areas, with an inviting atmosphere. Some of her favorite times had been had in a coffee shop. Settling back against the chair, she graciously accepted the menu that the waitress handed them. Nodding her head at her statement about the technical difficulties, she smiled. She didn’t mind that they weren’t ready yet; it wasn’t like she intended on going anywhere anytime soon. She began flipping through the menu, and she stopped at the Italian meals. Without Alyssa with them, it made her happy that things weren’t awkward. That way she knew with or without Alyssa, they could still have good conversation and a good time. Yes, a proper date this could be considered, and she was going to enjoy it to the fullest.
”Any mother would be happy to hear that, I’m sure.” She said with a smile. ”That’s not a bad thing. Tradition is very important in a lot of ways. I’m the same way.” She said, looking to him before her eyes drifted back over the menu. ”Italian? You must be a man after my own heart. I love Italian food!” She said excitedly. She looked flippantly through the section where the Italian meals were, finally settling on one. ”I think I want the chicken parmesan.” She said. -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

Ned was definitely enjoying himself and the fact that he didn't have to watch out for Alyssa every second of his consciousness. The little girl was an imp and she would no doubt had made sure that he would keep his attention focused on her, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but when you were in the company of a woman, it could possibly lead to misunderstandings. It wasn't something Ned wanted with Signe, really, because he thoroughly enjoyed her company and he was enjoying himself immensely on this little date. He hadn't been on one in years so he was now falling back into the pattern, easily enough it seemed.
"Tradition can also be a bother sometimes," he commented with a light shrug of his shoulders, but he didn't get much of a chance to continue the topic since their server was suddenly back from around the corner, with a polite smile and the question what they would like to eat. After waiting for Signe to place her order, Ned made his, a small-town Italian speciality, and fell into a short debate as to which wine would go with both the meals best. The server was friendly and helpful and they reached an agreement soon enough, to the satisfaction of both of them, and she went on her way with the order while Ned turned back to Signe with a smile on his lips.
"So tell me, how was your trip to New York?" he asked, "You did send me some details but I confess, at that time Alyssa and I were ready to go on a fieldtrip so I wasn't reading as thoroughly as I should. My parents can't keep up with the girl anymore so I tend to do everything at once while making sure she doesn't bring the roof down." He smiled apologetically and waited for the response.

Signe hadn’t been on this genuine of a date in a long time, and she was enjoying herself greatly. Her thoughts couldn’t help but turn to Alyssa as they sat at their table, looking through menus. The little girl was full of life and a vivaciousness Signe couldn’t help but be jealous of. She’d never given much thought to when she would want to have children, but she wanted her own one day. Alyssa was one of t he most well-mannered children she’d ever been around, and she knew Ned had done an amazing job of raising her on his own. She’d never been the type of woman to be petty and want all of a man’s attention, especially when they were children involved, but it was nice for it to be just the two of them on this outing. ”That it may be, but if it wasn’t a tradition, then the bother wouldn’t worry us.” She said quickly before the server appeared. She ordered her meal at the appropriate time, and then listened to the short debate about which wine would go best. She simply nodded her head when asked if that was okay and she waited until the server had left before launching into her adventures from New York. Waving her hand at his excuse, she shook her head. ”Please don’t apologize. I understand completely.” She said, offering him a sweet smile. Thinking back on her summer spent in New York, she started to tell him about the month spent in the northern part of the United States. ”Well, we stayed with Brynlee’s family, of course. Her brother owns a couple night clubs, so we went out a few times. Obviously, I visited the toy store, quite a few times. Got some little things for Brynlee’s nieces and nephews, as well as Wida’ kids.” She said, mentally kicking herself. She hadn’t bonded as much with Wida’s kids as she had wanted to, nor with Wida herself. Things were just so hectic as of late with moving and all, but it was still no excuse. She felt like a horrible roommate. ”I did a lot by myself, sadly enough. Brynlee was busy with Wida and her children, so I was alone most of the time, but I didn’t mind. I got a lot done. We went to some museums and did some shopping, of course. There weren’t too many touristy things either of us hadn’t already done.” She said shrugging her shoulders. ”How was England?” -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

Ned chuckled lightly at what she said, smiling across the table at her. She was definitely making a valid point though he didn't think there was any reason to continue that particular topic. He was more interested in what she'd been up to while in New York. Ned hadn't visited the Big Apple in years now, he'd been there once before during his schooling years at Oxford, but that had been about it. Nothing more had come out of that fascination and now maybe he could go and visit again sometime. It was a definite possibility once Alyssa got a little older and didn't require 24/7 management. He would need to relax a little more about that before he'd let her loose on a city of that size.
Listening to what she said, Ned took notice of the minor details that didn't seem to pop out at once, like the fact that she wanted to bond with Wida's children, and that she'd done a lot of things on her own, with Brynlee and Wida going off together. Maybe not in the literal sense of the word, but he could detect a thing or two in a conversation if he listened carefully, something he was known to do from time to time. "That sounds like fun; I'll have to take Alyssa to New York at some point, when she's older. Right now she'd probably never appreciate it as much as she could later on," he commented. The server appeared with their wine, saying their meals would be done soon as well, to which Ned nodded in thanks and turned back to answer Signe's question.
"Rainy." He chuckled, amused. "Not always, but a lot. Thankfully Alyssa loves rain or any form of water, or I would have been in big trouble. We stayed with my parents and visited London a couple of times. My family owns a smaller estate in the countryside, nothing big, but enough for Alyssa to love it there. I did some reading that wasn't connected with how to deal with teenagers or royals, and just tried to enjoy myself away from Vineheart. But as it so happens here I am again, waiting for another year full of drama." He spread his arms wide at the explanation, smiling in an amused manner.

The one place she wanted to visit over the summer had been home, her home. Not New York – that was Brynlee’s home. But Sweden, where all of her childhood memories still were, and no longer plagued her as bad as before. Her heart yearned to hear her native tongue spoken in the midst of a crowd as she walked down a sidewalk, holding her father’s hand. Pushing the thoughts from her head, she offered Ned a smile. There was no doubt in her mind Alyssa would love New York City, but when the time was right. She did, in fact, agree that the precocious child was much to young to be able to truly enjoy what all it had to offer, even if it was just a trip to the zoo. ”I’m sure she’d love it at any age, but you are completely right. The city is much to vast and cultured to take in at six years old.” She said, chuckling slightly. She picked up the wine glass after the server poured, sipping at it slowly before setting it back down. ”The wine is delicious. You two did wonders picking it out.” She said, offering him the compliment before he launched into his tale of his summer in England. Listening, she smiled. ”That was one thing I always disliked about Europe. The weather is so much more drab than here, however, I do love water as well.” She said, her brain racing with all the things she could do with Alyssa in the warmer months – she hadn’t known the child was so attracted to the idea of water, so now she was even more excited to get to spend more time with her. ”The estate sounds lovely, and in the countryside I bet it was extremely peaceful. I’ve never preferred city life to country life.” She stated honestly. Who in their right mind would unless you just preferred going out and partying all night long? ”I enjoy reading as well; I’m glad you were able to get some pleasure reading done.” She said, laughing slightly at his last comment and as he spread his arms to reiterate a point. ”But alas, you are the headmaster. As if you had a choice.” She said teasingly, her eyes focusing in and finding his, holding his gaze momentarily before taking another sip of her wine. -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

"When she's older," Ned agreed, "I'll take her to New York. And any other place she wants to visit, if I can and for as long as I can. I want her to know that she means everything to me." He cut himself short, not wanting to divulge his emotional secrets. The connection he felt with Alyssa would be strange to anyone who didn't know the child, especially since she was not his biological daughter. But as Ned had once told Wida, it wasn't about being related by blood - it was who could take care of someone better, and he was in a definitely better position than his ex wife, who he wouldn't have allowed near the child even if she begged him. But as it happened, she didn't want anything to do with Alyssa, or so it seemed.
"Well I like Europe and its weather," he admitted, taking a sip of the wine himself, "and I'm guessing you must miss the winters in Sweden. I heard they can be magical." That was another place he hadn't been yet, though he was planning on visiting the Scandinavian royal countries at some point. Perhaps next summer, if Alyssa would consent to staying with her grandparents. He didn't think dragging her around on a fieldtrip at age seven would really make her love him any more. "And you don't get a countryside like that here in America," he agreed, smiling and shrugging his shoulders.
The server came with their meals just at Signe's comment, and Ned laughed softly, thanking the other woman among gentle chuckles. "No, I have absolutely no choice. But so long as princesses don't get into catfights anymore and those silly cliché groups we have don't wage war against one another in the hallways, then I'm a happy man." He unwrapped his silverware while he was speaking; he didn't think his words would come true, however, because the royals at Vineheart were basically too dramatic for their own good, which left him with no choice but to play the strict headmaster.

Her heart warmed at his words. For a man to love his daughter as much as Ned did Alyssa was a rare thing to find. Some parents only put up with their children because they felt like they had to but children are not an obligation, nor should they be treated as such. It was simple – you have them, you take care of them. If you don’t want them, you know the measures to take in order not to have them. ”I’m sure she knows that already. You do everything for her.” She said honestly. In the few months since she had seen the two of them interact, it was easy to tell who ruled the center of Ned’s universe – she was six years old and the cutest child in the world, Miss Alyssa. ”Have you taken her to Disney yet? All of them are fabulous. I bet she’d love it now more so than when she’s older.” She perked up at the mention of winter and Sweden. Nodding her head, her mind drifted off slightly before she added more to the conversation. ”Oh, you heard right. There’s nothing like the wintertime in Sweden. City or countryside – being in both it’s like you’re transported to a whole new world.” She said with a smile. She had travelled all over Europe as a child; that was one of the things she and her father loved to do together was travel, especially over the holidays. ”I’ve actually still got an apartment in the city there. I haven’t been back in two years, but it’s just cheaper to keep it for when I go back than to try and sell it and I really don’t think I could.” The wine glass touched her lips once more for a sip, just as their meals came. Nodding her thanks to the server, she unwrapped her own silverware, placing the napkin in her lap. ”Any time you have a group of girls together though, there’s going to be some kind of cattiness going around.” She said matter of factly, but she knew she wasn’t telling him anything he didn’t already know. He was, after all, the headmaster. She took a bite of her pasta and after swallowing nodded at him. ”You were right, this is amazing.” -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

Ned didn't know why he hadn't told anyone about the fact that Alyssa wasn't biologically his. Of course no one would really look at him in a weird way, this was America after all, nothing wrong with a child being adopted. But it went against every sense of moral he had, all the ethic courses he'd taken, to share something like that, even though the girl obviously didn't look anything like him. Actually she didn't really look much like her mother either, taking entirely after her biological father, but since Ned didn't really save any pictures of his ex wife anywhere near him, there was no danger of anything ever coming to pass, but at Vineheart, you never really knew.
At Signe's question, he shook his head, "No, not yet, I might take her the next holiday season. She's been begging me to take her somewhere like that for a while now if I'm honest, I was just hesitant." He didn't really know why that was so, but oh well. At her description of Sweden, he smiled, "It sounds lovely. I really want to visit someday. And of course you're doing quite the reasonable thing with keeping that apartment. Real estate prices are going balistic right now." He shook his head, wondering where everything would lead them, not that he had any inclination to know. It was like trying to watch a sleeping bear, terrified of him waking up.
Laughing softly at her exclamation over the food, Ned allowed himself a self-satisfactory smile, "Sometimes, I'm known to be right." He held his amusement at bay - barely, the corners of his lips were quivering ever so slightly. He didn't know why, but being with Signe made him feel like he could be less tense. Almost like with Klara, but Klara was a really good friend and Signe, well ... he didn't know what Signe was in his life yet. However, this particular dinner tonight was very explicit in its own way, not that he wasn't enjoying himself. "So tell me, you've moved everything already? To the new house I mean," he asked inbetween bites.
He's gonna ask her to dance once they're done. Just saying xD

Signe had gotten the perfect combination – her looks from her mother, and her personality from her father. She had inherited the physical beauty of a true Swedish woman, yet had never known the figure who had given it to her. In a lot of ways, she was glad her father had never remarried – she didn’t know what she would have done having a step mother. Would she have adopted her, or would she simply just have been the mother figure she’d never had? Her father had done a perfectly find job raising her until his death by himself, thank you very much. Sure, the thought of him being happy again wouldn’t have hurt, but she honestly didn’t think he would have been happy again, not like he had been with her mother. A love like theirs only came around once in a lifetime, even death couldn’t separate it. Nodding her head, she added with a smile. ”She obviously knows what she wants. I’m sure she can almost manipulate you into giving her everything on a whim, except for big things like a vacation. Just wait; it will come.” She said with a laugh. She could understand his hesitancy, Alyssa was still small and was an only child – that, if anything, made the thought of her getting lost, especially in a place as big as an amusement park, worse. Sighing softly, she grinned to him. ”So I’ve noticed. It’s been hard keeping a good grip on it, especially while I was finishing up my Master’s and then getting through my first year of teaching. I had different phone calls every couple of weeks from people wanting me to put it up for sale, but there was never a reasonable price. It’s nice to know I have it there just in case, you know? It’s like a safety net.” She wasn’t entirely sure when she would go back to visit, although she wanted to try and go this coming winter. She had missed the breathtaking views the country had to offer. ”Know that you have a place to stay whenever you want to visit. Just let me know ahead of time so I can give you the key.” ”Now there’s something you don’t hear every day, a man admitting he’s right.” She said with a playful wink. She didn’t want to seem like a hovelling pig so she was taking small portion sized bites. In between those, the two made conversation. Acknowledging his question with a nod, she took a sip of wine before answering. ”If by that you mean is everything moved from the apartment to the house, then yes. Is everything unpacked and settled, no. We’ve gotten the main areas completely finished like the kitchen and the living room. My bedroom is completely done as well; having all those boxes was driving me completely crazy. I only have a few more finishing touches to add to the walls.” She said, using her hands animatedly as she talked. Stopping briefly to take another bite, she smiled. ”But yes, for the most part, everything is pretty much done.” -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:

He chuckled softly, knowing Signe was making quite a valid point here. Alyssa definitely had a way of extracting things or promises from him, mostly because she had him wrapped around her little finger. Of course Ned tried his best not to give in to her every whim, but it was hard, although luckily it seemed she wasn't going to get greedy or spoiled soon, which was somthing he definitely wanted to avoid. "Probably, she's been known to get everything she wants, within reason," he replied with an amused smile on his lips, taking a sip of the wine and enjoying the way it complemented the taste of the food.
Listening to Signe's explanation about the apartment, Ned nodded, "I know what you mean. My parents've had offers on the estate as well, not that they're thinking of selling it at all. People just seem to think they can buy everything, even when the owners don't want it to be so." At her more than generous offer, he raised his brows, surprised and also very pleasantly intrigued. "That's really generous of you. I don't think I'd want to impose. Of course if I did end up going, especially with Alyssa in tow, I might have to ask you to come along. Easier to have a local than to get lost with a tourist guide." He winked at her from across the table.
He was genuinely curious about their house and all, so he was enjoying her little explanation and the way she used her hand for demonstration was cute, in his opinion. "That's good to know, so you're all settled and ready to begin a new school year full of drama," he answered, holding the glass of wine in his hand as he spoke because he made a sip directly afterwards. The band had by now finished setting up and replaced the radio, but it wasn't something that would bother the guests, transition was easy and therefore no one really noticed anything except the regulars who knew what to expect.

”How could you not give in to her? She’s adorable. You saw I brought her back something from my trip, and I didn’t even see her for most of the summer.” She said. Alyssa was definitely going to be a spoiled little girl when Signe got through with her. She loved kids, had been around them ever since moving to New York from Sweden to live with Brynlee and her family. That was one reason she had wanted to become a teacher, she had a way with them that was too good to give up on. ”It’s like they have watchful eyes on it the whole time or something. Their excuse is always ‘We never see anybody there’; yeah, well, it’s because they’re trying to earn a living somewhere else to afford to be able to come back and visit.” She couldn’t stand people like that, nothing but vultures. As though they had nothing better to do than to watch and wait. Sighing, she judged his surprise reaction and grinned. ”Obviously, the generosity isn’t an issue. I’ve known nothing but that since I was young.” She said, looking to him. Pausing a moment to take another sip of wine, she continued. ”I’d be more than willing to come along. I’m always up for a trip back home. And didn’t you know, I was a tour guide before I became a teacher.” She said teasingly, providing a wink back in his direction. Truth be told, she hadn’t even noticed the transition from radio to band. She’d been enjoying the night, and these moments with the person in front of her. ”Let’s try to shoot for less drama filled.” She said with a smile, but knowing that wouldn’t be possible. ”Luckily, my office has been set up since practically the week after you hired me on. I can’t stand for there not to be organization in my work space.” She took three more bites and her plate was now empty. Finishing the last two sips that were in her glass, she put her hands in her lap and looked to him. ”That was quite a wonderful meal. I’m really glad we came here, it’s good to know this place is here.” -- -- ---- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Tag: ned (:
